On July 30, 1962, at Wrigley Field, Richie Ashburn pinch-hit for Turk Farrell and belted a single to left. That was the first appearance by a New York Met in an All-Star game. In 46 years of All-Star play, the Mets have had one MVP, fielded the starting pitcher three times and hit only two home runs. That sounds about right for the lovable, yet not-so-successful franchise. Ashburn scored the first Met run after recording his first hit in '62. In 1964, Ron Hunt took his position at second base to become the first Met to start an All-Star game. He batted eighth and went 1-3. That was also the only year the game was held at Shea Stadium. Tom Seaver made his All-Star debut as a rookie in 1967 and picked up the first Met save in Anaheim. Jerry Koosman and Dwight Gooden also went to the Midsummer Classic as rookies. And Koosman recorded a save in his debut in '68. 1968 was also the first year the team had multiple players appearing in the game?Seaver, Koosman and Jerry Grote. The first Mets pitcher to start for the National League was, of course, Seaver. He toed the rubber in 1970, and threw three innings without letting in a run while striking out four, as the NL won 5-4 in 12 innings when Pete Rose famously crashed into Ray Fosse with the winning run. Tug McGraw notched the first victory for a Mets pitcher in 1972. That same year and the next, Willie Mays made his last two All-Star appearances, while wearing a Mets uniform. The only MVP award won by a Met player was picked up in 1975 by Jon Matlack (since he was a Met he had to share it with the Cubs Bill Madlock). Matlack earned the victory by pitching two shutout innings and striking out four batters. Four years later, Lee Mazzilli almost won the award when he hit a pinch-hit home run (in his first All-Star at-bat) to tie the game in the top of the eighth. The next inning he drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in what turned out to be the winning run. The 1986 game saw a glory matchup on the mound when Dwight Gooden faced Roger Clemens. Gooden took the loss when he gave up two runs in three innings pitched. That year, not surprisingly, the Mets fielded the most starting players in their history (Gooden, Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez and Darryl Strawberry), and also added a reserve player (Sid Fernandez). El Sid picked up the save in '87, and Gooden started and lost again in '88. Al Leiter was the last Mets pitcher to get on the ledger, when he was stuck with the loss in 2000. Mike Piazza made six All-Star appearances as a Met, which ties him with Seaver and Strawberry for the team record. Strawberry and Carlos Beltran share the team record for most career All-Star hits with four. Beltran also just missed out on an MVP award in 2006, when he went 2-4 with a double, but Trevor Hoffman blew the save as the AL won, 3-2 (and American Leaguer Michael Young was given the award). That same game, David Wright hit a home run in his first All-Star at-bat. This year, Billy Wagner is representing the team (insert joke here), but the only Mets deserving of an All-Star starting berth are Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez.

Mets sign prospect Benjamin Mark!!!

I can not believe this, at one point a top prospect, Ben Mark has been signed by the mets and is going to the AA Bingamton and will probably be down there for a couple years. He tore up his elbow in his senior year of high school, so teams have been suspect to sign him but since the mets are from New York and have money coming out the you know where they took a chance. At his best...

Theo Epstein, Omar Minaya: No Interest in Bonds

After speculation in print that the Red Sox had expressed interest in Barry Bonds,GM Theo Epstein wasted no time shooting down that rumor. He said there was nothing to the speculation. Bonds agent, Jeff Borris released a statement saying there had been no contact from anyone within the Mets organization pertaining to his client, Bonds. Minaya stopped short of saying there was...

Mets Beginning To Meet Expectations, Even Alou

The Mets seem to be heading into the All Star break on a high note. They're finally beginning to hit expectations. They've won six of their last seven games and have cut the Phillies lead to 1.5 games. They seem to be hitting on all cylinders right now despite their starting second baseman and corner outfielders being on the DL. Yesterday was no exception.despite a rain...

This Is A Surprise: Moises Alou Hurt Again

In what is becoming more of an expectation rather than a surprise, Moises Alou is hurt again. The 42-year-old outfielder left his rehab game in Double-A Binghamton last night with a cramp in his left hamstring. Alou is trying to return from the DL for the third time this year...

Early Morning Madness: Moises Alou is old and crippled edition

I have one thought running through my head after the Mets and Johan Santana won 5-0 last night, and it has nothing to do with anything that happened in that game: Moises Alou got hurt again?!?! This is not a joke.

Is Mike Pelfrey the Ace of the Mets?

Mike Pelfrey jumped out of the gates of 2008 with two wins, completing a task that took him 12 starts to complete in 2007. With those two wins, he picked up 2/3 of his '07 season midway through April. In his third start, he received a no decision. His next six appearances all resulted in losses, even though he carried a no hitter into the top of the seventh inning on May 15...

Everyone saw this one coming: Moises Alou has a torn hamstring

The always-injured Moises Alou was just served another blow. Alou has a torn hamstring, suffered when diving for a ball in minor league play. Well there is your first mistake: diving for a ball in the minors. You're old, chronically injured, and rehabbing another injury, why in the world are you diving for balls? It's the minors, the results really don't matter. All that...

Maybe we shouldn't vote David Wright into the final All Star spot

David Wright is on the ballot for the final spot on the National League All Star roster. There are posts out the wazoo extolling all of Wright's accomplishments and achievements. Yes, I'd like to see Wright get the recognition he deserves (he is tied for third in the league with 70 RBI). But I'd also like to see the Mets win. We all saw what a day off does to this kid...

Just Short- Phils

Phils tried to make a huge comeback over the Mets last night, but failed and came up just short (that's what she said). The comeback attempt was entertaining, but in the end it's still a loss and therefore doesn't really matter then. Adam Eaton was the main culprit for the loss. Stats since joining the Phils- 38 games started, 13-17 record, 262 IP, 309 H, 171 ER...

The Yankee Stadium All Star Game: 1977 vs. 2008

In case you haven't been paying attention to the rampant stretches of white columns that have been terrorizing New York landmarks in the commercials airing on Fox, next week happens to be the MLB All Star Game which is being played for the final time at the current version of Yankee Stadium. The last time the All Star Game was hosted by the Yankees was 31 years ago in 1977...

9th Inning Anxiety

While I watched Billy Wagner once again take years off of the lives of New York Mets fans everywhere when he blew a save recently against the Phillies, it hit me that the feeling of angst I had was way too familiar. It's one of the worst feelings a baseball fan could have, that feeling that no lead is ever safe. Unfortunately, Mets fans know this feeling very well. In my lifetime...

Mets Climbing As Phillies Begin to Dive

The Mets won their 4th in a row vs the Giants at Shea on Tuesday. Combine that with the Phillies' loss in St. Louis and the Mets are only 1.5 games out in the NL East. Could this be a reversal of what happened last season? After all, payback is a b@#$%

Where are all the Mets detractors now?

For weeks and weeks I've been reading newspaper articles, blogs, forums and all that jazz clamoring for the Mets to make a move, fire people, spark a fire sale and the like. Now that the Mets have gone on to win four in a row and pull within 1.5 games of first place, that seems to have died down significantly, which makes sense. But where is the praise for this team?

Your Nightmares Now Sponsored By Major League Baseball

know they've been up for a while, but I just took a close look at some of these All-Star Game statues and threw up in my mouth a little. In theory, I can appreciate the marketing strategy. Forty-two Statue of Liberty replicas put up throughout NYC, painted in the colors of a Major League team...
