As late as yesterday, the buzz was that Boise State's Chris Petersen was Arkansas's top choice. Anybody that follows college football knows that Petersen is not going anywhere. Every year Petersen is somebody's top choice and every year he comes back to Boise. Another name that was tied to the job was Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy. One thing is for sure, Wisconsin's Bret Bielema's name didn't seem to be attached to the job.
So what happened today? Bielema was named the latest Arkansas head coach in what quite honestly was and is a shocking hire. Bielema is a Big Ten guy. He played nose guard at Iowa before moving on to coach at Iowa and then at Wisconsin. His only non-Big Ten gig before Arkansas was a two year stop at Kansas State as defensive coordinator. Bielema spent two years as DC at Wisconsin before spending seven seasons as head coach.
