MADISON, Wis. A quirk in the class schedule means Wisconsin's football team receives a reprieve from spring practice beginning Friday. That's when spring break officially begins, which gives Badgers players more than one full week to recuperate from the first four practices of spring ball. Though Thursday represented the team's first spring practice in full pads, the Badgers won't return to action until Tuesday, April. 10. Spring break doesn't fall during practice every year at Wisconsin, but when it does, players are grateful for the down time. "It gives the guys who have been hurting a chance to get their body back and gets you an extra week of recovery," Badgers cornerback Marcus Cromartie said. Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema is using the spring break as a halfway point for holding out players with nagging injuries. Wide receiver Jared Abbrederis, who suffered a foot injury during the Rose Bowl on Jan. 2, and tight end Jacob Pedersen (groin injury) are among those expected to return to action after spring break."Some guys that have played some good football for us, they're kind of in that maybe not quite ready (stage)," Bielema said. "I said, Let's wait until after the two weeks we have here and the week of spring break.' It gives them three more weeks of healing."For Wisconsin players from out of state, the week off also allows the opportunity to see family for the first time in months. The Badgers did not receive extended time off during the December holiday break because they were preparing to play Oregon in the Rose Bowl."We don't get to see our families much," said Wisconsin free safety Dezmen Southward, a native of Sunrise, Fla. "We see our families, come back and we're focused for another three or four weeks. I think its pretty good. Maybe some guys don't like it, but I don't have a problem with it."Wisconsin will hold 10 more practices after spring break, which leads up to the Badgers' spring game on Saturday, April 28 at 4 p.m.Badgers defensive coordinator Chris Ash, who has also coached at Iowa State and San Diego State, has seen the pros and cons of spring break falling in the middle of practices."Sometimes the guys kind of hit a wall mentally in spring ball at a certain point," Ash said. "A break is not bad. The biggest thing you want to guard against is when they do come back, that they retain the information they were taught before and you don't have to take a practice or two to get back in the flow of things. That's the No. 1 thing that is probably a disadvantage to it. "But having a mental break and physical break for guys during the middle of spring football isn't a bad thing."Follow Jesse Temple on Twitter.
