Big Ten Football Week 9 Review Week 9 Record:     2-4 (1st sub .500 record since end of 2010 season)     Record: 52-22     70.2% Indiana-31  Illinois-17…..CORRECT…..first thing is first…let’s give Indiana coach Kevin Wilson a tiny amount of love for getting his 1st Big Ten W…congrats coach…and it was on the road as any coach will tell you winning on the road is tough in this league…now let’s look at it a bit closer..it was against Illinois, who I don’t know if I have seen a team play this badly in the conference in a long time…and it was at Memorial Stadium..which isn’t as daunting this year as it has been in the past…Illinois coach Tim Beckman has some work to do.Northwestern-28  Iowa-17…..CORRECT…..BINGO!….These are the kinds of games that Wildcat fans have been expecting out of QB Kain Colter all season long…6 of 9 passing for 80 yards and a TD but 26 carries for 166 yards and 3 rushing TD’s…now HB Venric Mark has been a pleasant surprise (another 162 yards on Saturday) so they haven’t really needed Colter to be the featured rushing superstar…but these kinds of performances certainly don’t hurt…Where do you go at the end of the season if you are Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz?..do you hire another offensive coordinator and go through the adaption process again but with a new QB as well?….I have no idea what I would do…I guess retirement is also an option for Captain Kirk. Minnesota-44  Purdue-28….MISS….How about freshman Gopher QB Phillip Nelson?…the kid goes 15-22 for 246 yards and 3 TD’s in the 1st half essentially and the Pher’s cruise to an easy victory…Minnesota gained over 450 yards and averaged over 7 yards per play…and big plays were the norm for Jerry Kill’s bunch…4 of the 5 Minnesota TD’s were longer than 30 yards…TD passes of 34, 38 and 63 yards by Nelson and an INT return for 43 yards light up TCF Bank Field for UM’s 1st Big Ten win of the season…Michigan defensive coordinator Greg Mattison has taken notice.. Michigan State-16  Wisconsin-13 OT….MISS….Streaks are made to be broken…and that is exactly what the Spartans did on Saturday…the Badgers had won 21 straight home games..which was the 2nd longest active streak in the country (LSU-22..on the line this coming weekend by the way vs Bama)…the Spartan defense (and by the end of the season, it may be better than the 2011 edition) was the story…they held the Badgers to 19 yards rushing…46 from Montee’ Ball and 16 by James White (remember non-footballoholics…yardage lost on sacks is added or better yet subtracted from rushing totals)…so when push comes to shove…this is the signature W for Mark Dantonio in 2012. Ohio State-35  Penn State-23….MISS….Braxton Miller just wins…he is making plays when they have to be made…on Saturday after his team had marched 85 yards on 8 plays to seemingly seize control of the game 28-10…the Nittany Lions methodically finished off an 18 play 80 yard drive with a TD to pull within 12 at 28-16…the Buckeyes then had to begin the next drive at their own 8 with a raucous PSU crowd going bonkers…then on 3rd and 3, a calm Miller hit TE Jake Stoneburner (from Bedrock…lived two doors down from the Rubbles) over the middle for a 72 yard TD and that was it….so now Braxton Miller is a Hesiman candidate…well good for him. Nebraska-23  Michigan-9….MISS….The Michigan offense hasn’t scored a TD in 8 quarters…and if you would like to get technical, the starters haven’t scored in 9 quarters (Thomas Rawls scored in the 4th vs Illinois)…it seemed as if Michigan was doing exactly what they wanted to do early…run the ball, eat the clock and keep the Corn’s offense on the sideline…but when Denard Robinson got hurt, the Nebraska defense pinned it’s ears back and went after backup QB Russell Bellomy…and it worked…the kid threw 3 INT’s.  The Huskers have now won 11 straight home games…some national perspective..LSU leads the nation with 22 straight home wins…surprisingly, Northern Illinois has won 19 straight at home…Michigan has won 12 straight in Ann Arbor..
