Phillip Sims, the former Oscar Sims High School Standout who signed with the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2010, and was listed as the “co-starter” alongside A.J. McCarron at the start of last season, has opted to leave Tuscaloosa and try his wares elsewhere. However, his departure won’t come without a little commentary as to why and one of the statements made by Sims’ high school coach could raise a few eyebrows: In an interview published by The Virginian Pilot, Richard Morgan states that the reason McCarron won the starting job over Sims was not because McCarron was the better quarterback, but because he was the hometown product: Morgan wasn’t surprised that McCarron, who saw action in eight games at quarterback as a freshman in 2010, won the starting job because McCarron is from Alabama and won a state title with Saint Paul’s Episcopal in Mobile. “If it’s a close competition between an in-state guy and an out-of-state guy, the in-state guy is getting the job,”  [emphasis added] he said. “Phillip was in a situation where I thought he was the better quarterback, but he was the out-of-state guy.
