There is nothing wrong when a coach feels that his team is better than another team. In fact that should be expected. But, when that is said publicly, no matter the intent of the message, after a loss, it can easily be misconstrued. That is exactly what happened as Charlie Strong addressed the media on Monday, three days after his team’s loss to UCF. “It’s hard to move on,” he said. “Especially, not to take anything away from Central Florida, know they were a good football team, it’s one that we gave away, when you look at it. Me, personally, I thought we were the better team and we let one get away from us.” “I said that yesterday and I believe that, and I said it to them yesterday. I said I have not changed about how I feel about this football team. And even though we lost that game the other night, and you have to give Central Florida credit, but I still say the best football team lost that football game. And we are. And I’ll continue to say that to them.” Needless to say, UCF head coach George O’Leary did not take kindly to Strong’s comments. “Charlie did that? Really? Well, they’re a very talented team,” O’Leary said. “Obviously when you say the best team didn’t win you’ve got to look in the mirror. I think it was a great win and all I look at is wins and losses. I don’t get involved in ‘he said, you said, we said.’ I think anytime you lose a game, I always look in the mirror. What could I have done more to help the win, change the game and stuff. I don’t get involved in ‘We were better than them.’ We won that night and they have a real talented team, they really do. But we move on. I don’t get concerned with people talking after a game.” I completely understand where Coach Strong is coming from with his comments, but this is not something you say after a loss. You lost. Games are not won on paper. They are won on the field. While I may agree that Louisville may be a more talented team, this sounds a bit like sour grapes. Coach O’Leary’s reaction to Strong’s comments were perfect, “Really?!?!”. Complete and utter surprise. I’m surprised too. But, all in all, I think it shows that Strong is still learning as a head coach and while he has improved vastly, he is still improving when it comes to addressing the media. Yeah, you can believe that you are better than a team that beat you. In fact, that should be your mindset. Your team needs that confidence. But, you come at it by saying, “Look, despite that loss I still believe that we are better than that team. That is a game that we should have won. But, we have to square things up. We have to play harder. We have to play smarter. If we do, we have the ability to beat anyone in the country. But, never do you say that you are better than a team that just beat you publicly. Because like I said earlier, it just sounds like sour grapes.
