It is never good news when you have your biggest non-conference game without your starting quarterback at 100%. Nathan Scheelhaase was carted off for precautionary measure with an ankle injury that he suffered in the second quarter in their season opening victory over Western Michigan. Former Wheaton Warrenville-South superstar Riley O’Toole filled in and didn’t have to break much of a sweat after throwing just three passes (completed two of them). The ground game was effective with Josh Ferguson picking up the slack for an ineffective Donovonn Young. O’Toole has not officially been named the start a Miles Osei fits Tim Beckham’s spread as well as more of a duel-threat similar to Scheelhaasse. However, the Illini are a defensive star-studded with Michael Buchanan and Johnathan Brown leading the way.
