HONOLULU (AP) -- Cody Kessler will start at quarterback for No. 24 Southern California in its opener against Hawaii.
USC's athletic department tweeted less than two hours before game time that Kessler would start Thursday night.
Kessler is expected to split time with fellow sophomore Max Wittek, who is more experienced with two starts for the Trojans at the end of last season.
Coach Lane Kiffin has been coy about who would begin the game, but said both would have an opportunity to prove against the Rainbow Warriors that they deserve the starting job.
Despite Wittek's strong arm and experience, Kessler showed himself to be more mobile and resourceful during the team's preseason.

USC head coach Lane Kiffin discusses the Trojans 30-13 season opening win at Hawaii.
There was plenty of speculation leading into this game about who was going to be the quarterback for USC. It turns out that the defense might render the play of the man under center moot.

USC redshirt senior Devon Kennard originally didn't have any plans to still be around Troy in the year 2013... but after sitting out 2012 due to injury, he's back for his fifth and final year. Kennard's coaches call last year a 'Blessing in disguise' for the defensive end turned outside linebacker.
USC opened its 2013 season Thursday night at Aloha Stadium with a 30-13 win over Hawaii. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Cody Kessler started for the Trojans, but it was the USC defense who stole the show.
Southern California still doesn't have a clear starting quarterback and coach Lane Kiffin is already taking criticism from fans after an unimpressive win in Thursday night's season opener.
But Kiffin says it's most important that the Trojans started their season with a win, giving him more time to evaluate Cody Kessler and Max Wittek as he decides which passer gives...

USC head coach Lane Kiffin anticipated playing both quarterbacks Cody Kessler and Max Wittek in the Trojans season opener against Hawaii and he stuck to his plan. However, part of the plan was to distinguish a starter by games end... and that didn't come close to happening.
