Louisville newcomer Gerald Christian has been added to the initial watch list for this year’s John Mackey Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top tight end.
Christian, a former Florida Gator, will be making his debut as a Cardinal this year after sitting out in 2012 due to the NCAA’s transfer rule.
The West Palm Beach native was a four-star prospect coming out of high school in 2010. He was an Army All American. He chose Florida over Miami, Florida St., Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Georgia, among others.
After playing mostly as a blocking tight end and fullback in Will Muschamp’s offense, Christian decided to transfer. In his final season with the Gators Christian caught four passes for 72 yards and one touchdown. During spring practice his teammates went as far as saying he was the most talented player in the Louisville roster. Christian is expected to be an integral piece to this year’s Louisville office.
