The quarterback position is the biggest question mark for the Gophers heading into next season.
The way I see it, there are two guys competing for the starting spot, Mitch Leidner and Chris Streveler.
Right now, Leidner seems to be the front runner, but Streveler has looked a lot better this spring, especially when it comes to hitting his targets on stride.
The Gopher’s will be dealing with adversity at the QB position due to Philip Nelson’s transfer. Nelson saw the majority of time as the starting QB last year, but decided to transfer to Rutgers this off-season.
Both he and Leidner struggled to effectively pass the ball. Leidner ended up with only a 55.1 percent completion rate on the season, but saw limited action.
For Leidner to keep the starting job all season that number needs to improve. The new addition of Melvin Holland Jr. as wide receiver could help.
The upside for Leidner is that the job is essentially now his. He’ll get the original snaps and not come cold off the bench. Hopefully for Minnesota, this will help him be more effective.
On the other hand, there’s Streveler, who sat out last season due to an early injury. Not all that much is known about the kid aside from the fact that he’s a dual threat quarterback like Nelson was.
This could be a scenario that resembles last season for the Gophers with Nelson and Leidner. Except this time, if Leidner struggles, Streveler steps in to prove that he can make the right plays.
I’m sure Jerry Kill will give Leidner his fair chance, but this upcoming season is supposed to be about winning, so if Leidner struggles early and often, I expect Streveler to step in to mix things up.
The QB battle is really interesting for Minnesota, but it’s also a gray area right now. I expect Kill to pursue a quality QB in recruiting to help fix this problem next year if Leidner and Streveler fail to be solid.
