It's not just the game balls that are deflated at Southern California this fall.
An unimpressive season reached a new, weird low late Wednesday night when No. 21 USC announced a student manager had been dismissed for underinflating several game balls during the Trojans' loss to No. 2 Oregon last weekend.
Coach Lane Kiffin insists he and quarterback Matt Barkley knew nothing about the manager's actions on the Oregon sideline before the game.
Kiffin says he's disappointed in the distraction. He also realizes people will wonder whether his team has a culture that makes it acceptable to try such questionable tactics.
Earlier this season, a USC player changed jersey numbers during a game against Colorado, apparently to facilitate a trick play. The tactic is legal, but usually considered unsportsmanlike.
BEST OF MAXIM
After yielding an atrocious 730 yards of offense in last week’s 62-51 loss to Oregon, embattled University of Southern California (USC) head coach Lane Kiffin is under intense scrutiny to axe the team’s defensive coordinator, his 72-year-old father, Monte. The … Continue reading →
Southern California: In the matter of the curiously, and criminally (in terms of NCAA rules) deflated footballs and coach with the over-inflated sense of self, the question is not whether we can believe Lane Kiffin – we already know that we cannot – but whether we should here.
On Wednesday USC reported that it had fired a student manager who deflated footballs that the Trojans’...
LOS ANGELES Inevitably, if you are fortunate enough to have a father you revere live long enough, there comes a time where you have to begin searching for reminders of the man you once knew.
They gradually become obscured by uncertainty, frailty and other diminishing curses of age that no amount of determination can seem to beat back.
Now imagine that you are not only this mans...
USC Coach Lane Kiffin speaks with the media following the Trojans Thursday practice.
USC Coach Lane Kiffin says no one on the coaching staff or team knew about a student-manager deflating game balls during the Trojans' game against Oregon.
USC’s Head Coach Lane Kiffin has done some pretty shady stuff during his time as a College Football Head Coach. Whether it’s piling up secondary NCAA violations at Tennessee, or having his backup quarterback wear his kickers’ jersey, he’s built up quite a reputation for himself. This time though, USC is in the headlines for something a Student Manager did.On USC’s website...
It seems that controversy just seems to continue to show up at the doorstep of the USC football program this season. Of course, most of it is Lane Kiffin’s doing, since he foolishly lied about his coaches’ poll vote and even more foolishly briefly banned a reporter from USC’s practices for doing his job.
Add in the fact that visiting teams were banned from walkthroughs at the...
Tweet Whether or not he had anything to do with it, Lane Kiffin is the most entertaining head coach in college football. Per the university’s website, the USC Trojans have been fined by the Pac-12 for under-inflated game balls that were used in USC’s loss to the Oregon Ducks Saturday Nov. 3: Game officials discovered [...]
(Eds: With AP Photos.) By JIM LITKE AP Sports Columnist School officials at Southern California fired a student manager after he admitted taking the air out of some footballs before last week's home game against Oregon.
Good. Now they can resume searching for who took the wind out of Lane Kiffin's sails.
Just kidding about that last part, if only because Kiffin hardly needs...
Tweet When the season started it was quarterback Matt Barkley who was receiving all of the Heisman hype around USC’s campus. There was even a smartphone app created, that he was involved in the development of, to help fans (and voters) keep track of Barkley and other players throughout the season. Among those players [...]
LOS ANGELES ---When Robert Woods got the call on Monday night, he immediately had to stop what he was doing.
He was in the middle of a Twitter war of words with UCLA freshman defensive back Randall Goforth. Or so he thought.
Apparently Goforth's Twitter account was hacked and sent out a tweet directed to Woods saying "We will beat you guys on November 17th. Believe the...
The two top stories on AL.com, the Internet voice of Alabama, this morning: football stories. Then, you go to the Alabama football page and they’re still talking about the LSU game – on Wednesday. Roll Tide, indeed.
Meanwhile, at USC, Lane Kiffin fired a student manager after he deflated footballs below NCAA-mandated levels before the Oregon game. Poor, USC...
