The Duck Stops Here:
The new AP poll is out today and the Ducks are second behind Alabama, moving ahead of Ohio State after the Buckeyes struggled a little with Buffalo in their home opener. Ohio State remains second in the USA Today/Coaches Poll, which figures directly in the BCS formula.
Poll position doesn't absolutely matter until December, when it matters a lot. Teams in the number one and two slot get an $23.6 million payout for their conference, plus the opportunity to play for the Crystal Football. Until then it's chiefly bragging rights and bulletin board material for opponents, except it's much easier to finish in the Top Ten if you start the season there. For example, a loss to Clemson at Memorial Stadium only knocked #5 Georgia down to #11--they can still climb into contention, something a lot of 0-1 teams will have trouble doing.
Numbers game: Particularly because he plays on the West Coast, Marcus Mariota needs a certain threshold of statistical excellence to stay in the Heis...

The Tailgater College Football Rankings: Top 25, Week 1
Opening weekend of the 2013 season did not disappoint. As expected, Georgia-Clemson was a thriller, while LSU and TCU had a nice battle of their own. The FCS erupted with a record seven wins over FBS opponents; more on that to follow this week.
Here is a look at our individual college football rankings after week 1:...
Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota says it was a little strange seeing Mark Helfrich roaming the sideline during a game.
Helfrich spent the past four seasons watching the Ducks from up in the booth at Autzen Stadium as offensive coordinator.
But now that Chip Kelly has moved on to the NFL, Helfrich is getting a close-up view of the No. 3 Ducks.

Nike and Oregon continue to stay oh so fly. Tonight, we got a glimpse at some brand new cleats that the Ducks have in store — some really shiny looking Nike Alpha Pro TDs. Even the bottoms are flashy.
The photo was posted by sophomore WR B.J. Kelley on his Instagram:
So…when will see the new Ducks uniforms to match? We can only hope that Nike is dreaming up another something...
Over the last couple seasons it has become common for colleges to have all sorts of alternate uniforms. It started out with helmets and jerseys, but now that so many schools are going with alternate uniforms many have taken to creating special gloves, chin guards, face masks, and cleats.
The undisputed King of the Alternate Uniform craze is of course the Oregon Ducks (let...
Ducks win big
Concluding just like everybody had expected, the Oregon Ducks rolled over the Nicholls State Colonels to the tune of a 66-3 score that saw the No. 3 team in the nation put up points in bunches. Never having to punt the ball (though Oregon did turn the ball over twice on downs), the Ducks put three touchdowns and a field goal on the board in the first quarter and never...
No player can win a Heisman Trophy in September. I've checked, as the erstwhile Mr. September, Denard Robinson, probably has too.
But that doesn't mean early impressions can't set the stage for a run to New York. Propelled by a thrilling Week 1 performance, Kellen Moore was a finalist in 2010 and in '11, eventual winner Robert Griffin III thrust himself into the...

Oregon wide receiver B.J. Kelley posted the above photo of the latest swag developed for the Ducks by Uncle Phil's Miguided Children on his Instagram account - silver Nike Alpha Pro TD cleats with very rainbow-esque bottoms. No word on what the Ducks will be wearing with their new kicks, but it'...
Virginia Head Coach Mike London held his weekly media conference on Monday, Sept. 2. London was asked a number of questions regarding the Caviliers’ next opponent – the Oregon Ducks. Virginia and Oregon play Saturday, Sep. 7 at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, with kickoff scheduled for 12:30 p.m. (Pacific).
The Oregon Ducks moved up a spot in the latest Associated Press poll to the No. 2. The poll was released on Tuesday morning with Alabama holding down the top spot, followed by Oregon, Ohio State, Clemson, Stanford, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Louisville, LSU and Florida State rounding out the Top-10.
If any college football fans were wondering how the Ducks would look under Mark Helfrich after the departure of Chip Kelly, they got their answer on Saturday afternoon: not much different. Running an offense that looked faster than ever, Oregon torched the lowly Nicholls State Colonels by a score of 66-3 and did just what they needed to in their 2013 opener.
