MADISON, Wis. The University of Minnesota quarterback carousel took another turn Saturday against Wisconsin.Gophers freshman Philip Nelson got the start at quarterback, making his college debut against Wisconsin. Nelson started in place of injured senior MarQueis Gray and struggling sophomore Max Shortell.Nelson was a standout at Mankato West High School and was the top-ranked quarterback in the state of Minnesota. Scout.com ranked Nelson the 46th-best quarterback in the nation last year. He was named Minnesota Mr. Football after setting state records for single-season touchdowns (55) and career touchdowns (135).Minnesota coach Jerry Kill was hoping to preserve Nelson's redshirt this year, but the Gophers, 4-2 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten, clearly felt they had no choice but to play Nelson seven games into the season. Gray suffered an ankle injury in the Gophers' game against Western Michigan and missed two games before returning last weekend against Northwestern. But Gray re-injured the ankle in Minnesota's loss to the Wildcats and is being relegated to spot wide receiver duty Saturday. Shortell was just 9 for 19 for 103 yards against Northwestern.Nelson's first drive Saturday was uneventful. Minnesota went three and out after Nelson fumbled the snap on third down. He did not attempt a pass in the Gophers' first series.Follow Tyler Mason on Twitter.
