A 22-year-old man -- believed to be a football player at the University of Idaho -- was shot dead Sunday morning at a party in Los Angeles, KCBS-TV reported.
The shooting occurred around 1:30am local time at the Brewery Lofts in Lincoln Heights, authorities said.
Witnesses told KCBS they woke up to hear two gunshots followed by a volley of six more. The 22-year-old was transported to a local hospital, where he was declared dead. Another man was wounded and transported to a Long Beach Hospital. His condition was not known.
While authorities have not yet named the man who died, his friends said on social media networks that it was Ken McRoyal -- a wide receiver for the Vandals who previously played for El Camino Junior College in Los Angeles.
The school confirmed on Sunday that McRoyal had died, but did not provide any further details.
"It's a devastating loss," coach Robb Akey said in a statement. "We've lost a brother, a teammate, a family member. But, more importantly, a momma lost her son today.
"All of our prayers go to the family -- that they can be strong in their healing from this tragedy."
McRoyal, a native of New Orleans, moved with his family to California following Hurricane Katrina.
No arrests have been made. Authorities say a verbal dispute led to the shooting, but do not believe it was gang-related.
