Kyle Flood and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights received some good news on Sunday evening.
Senior linebacker Jamal Merrell will return to the lineup when the team travels to Louisville on Thursday. Merrell has missed the last three games due to a kidney injury.
“He passed all the tests and the qualifications that he needed to pass to get cleared,” Flood tells the media. “Physically, he looked like he could’ve played last week but he wasn’t medically ready to play. Now he’s cleared.”
Rutgers defense has done a solid job at stopping the run, but have struggled in other areas. They’re giving up 27-points per game. SMU scored 52 on the Scarlet Knights over the weekend.
The Bear, DE., native has started 28 of the last 29 games that he’s been available for. Merrell finished the 2012 season third in tackles (83) and fourth in tackles for loss (8.5). In the one full game he played this season, Merrell finished with eight total tackles.
