Earlier this week, it was officially announced that Sammy Watkins, the star wide receiver for Clemson, would be forgoing his senior season at the school to enter the NFL Draft. Watkins is expected to be one of the top receivers off of the board in May following an impressive season in which he caught 101 passes for 1464 yards and 12 touchdowns. Today, he met with the media to talk about the decision to go pro, but also to share how much Clemson means to him: Sammy Watkins: “It’s been a pleasure these past three years being a part of this university.” — Aaron Brenner (@Aaron_Brenner) January 10, 2014 SW “MIssing the family atmosphere (at Clemson) will be hard on me” — TigerNet.com (@ClemsonTigerNet) January 10, 2014 SW on Orange Bowl “There was a lot of joy, but also a sad moment knowing I won’t catch another ball from Tajh or the coaching staff” — TigerNet.com (@ClemsonTigerNet) January 10, 2014 Sammy said he thought about coming back and putting up more numbers, but he feels like he can go into NFL and make plays now — David Hood (@MDavidHood) January 10, 2014 Sammy Watkins…”I feel like I maximized my opportunity here. Coach Batson pushed me out of my comfort zone this summer.” — TigerNet.com (@ClemsonTigerNet) January 10, 2014 “Coach Swinney and the rest of the staff do a great job of preparing us not just for football but for life.” – Sammy Watkins — Clemson Football (@ClemsonFB) January 10, 2014 It’s great to see the appreciation and gratitude that Watkins has for the coaching staff that has stood by him throughout his college career, despite a few incidents off of the field. Tigers fans are surely sad to see Watkins leave considering his immense talent and productivity, but they will certainly get a chance to see him play on Sundays here in the near future.
