ASJ struck postgame Sometimes rivalries die out, and that’s started to be the case with Washington and Washington State. Husky fans now consider their biggest opponent to be the Ducks and not the Cougars. But that didn’t seem the case in Week 13, when the Cougs pulled off a stunning 28-31 upset in this season’s Apple Cup. The win was WSU’s only conference victory this season, prompting fans to storm the field of Martin Stadium. Amidst all the celebrating, Husky star tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins was attempting to get off the field. As he sifted through the crowd, one overzealous Cougs fan struck ASJ to the ground. Though many are reporting the hit as a “punch” it looks much more like a shove. You can judge for yourself, by checking out either this video or this gif. ASJ in action. (Photo: Elaine Thompson / AP) My personal take is a shove, as it doesn’t look like the fan’s hands raise up towards AJS’s face, but instead move towards his body in a pushing motion. Seferian-Jenkins wasn’t hurt, and later spoke with the media as business as usual. The fan quickly ran from the scene, and there have yet to be any announces of arrests. Washington State University has announced that they are quickly digging into the matter. It’s unclear why the fan seemed to target Seferian-Jenkins. The video shows ASJ bumping a fan a bit, but it seems completely unrelated. He has had a relatively pedestrian game for the Dawgs, making five catches for just 38 yards and a touchdown. While it’s not a huge debate in sports, no doubt this will bring up the matter of whether fans should be allowed to storm the field or not. Often times, it is frowned upon by Universities, but that’s because if the fans get on the field too early it can have implications on the game at hand in terms of penalties. You don’t usually hear about player safety being at the heart of the issue. But this most recent incident could spark a bit of controversy on the matter. Meanwhile, ASJ is fine and well. He did tweet about the incident, but later took it down. In the end, this is just a case of some idiot fan who doesn’t understand sportsmanship. While the University sorts out the matter, let’s just to focus on ASJ’s prolific season and WSU’s huge win. CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT THE HUSKIES CLUBHOUSE PAGE AT NWSPORTSBEAT!
