Notre Dame is currently squaring off against pesky Pittsburgh at Heinz Field, but the Irish will be without one of their best players the rest of the night. Early in the second quarter, star defensive end Stephon Tuitt was ejected for targeting after a hit on Pitt QB Tom Savage. Savage had left the pocket and was running for the first down when he saw Tuitt barreling down on him. He lowered his head in an attempt to avoid the tackle, and Tuitt and Savage collided helmet-to-helmet. Savage was running with the ball, so he was clearly not a defenseless player, and he may have actually initiated the helmet-to-helmet contact by lowering his head. But the referees upheld the call as targeting, and Tuitt was not allowed to return to the game. Here are a couple of looks at the play: Once Tuitt was ejected, Pitt marched down the field to tie the game, 7-7.

Notre Dame suffered its third loss of the season this weekend against Pittsburgh at Heinz Field, 28-21. The Irish played most of the game without star defensive end Stephon Tuitt, who was ejected early in the game on a rather controversial targeting call. Here’s a clip of the hit for a refresher (or you can check out more angles here):
The call was met with skepticism on Twitter...
By most accounts, the penalty and ejection on Notre Dame defensive end Stephon Tuitt against Pitt Saturday night was one of the more confusing calls of the 2013 college football season. Tuitt was hit with the controversial “targeting rule” penalty for lowering his helmet into Pitt quarterback Tom Savage – even though Savage himself lowered his own helmet to brace for the impact...
Notre Dame's chance to go to back-to-back BCS bowl games for the first time since the 2005-06 seasons is gone because it made too many mistakes against what had been a .500 team.
The Fighting Irish (7-3) might have been able to overcome the two interceptions thrown by Tommy Rees against Pittsburgh (5-4) on Saturday, including one into the end zone. Or giving up a 63-yard touchdown...
After taking a 5-0-1 overall record into South Bend this weekend as one of only two unbeaten teams left in the nation, the Gophers (5-1-1) fell to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 4-1.
In a game that rivaled last weekend's series against Boston College for speed, Minnesota just didn't protect the puck as aggressively as Notre Dame.

Notre Dame sophomore Cam Biedschied plans to sit out the 2013-14 season to preserve a year of eligibility.
Sports information director Bernie Cafarelli said Friday that coach Mike Brey and Biedscheid would talk about the decision after Friday night's game between the 21st-ranked Irish and Miami of Ohio. Biedscheid had sat out Notre Dame's two preseason games while considering...
I don’t like Notre Dame. I try to be professional and I won’t use some of the insults I’ve seen my fellow Pitt fans post on twitter and Facebook, but trust me, they’re in my head. I’d love to say a few things about that videographer murderer smug jerk Brian Kelly, but I won’t. The one thing to keep in mind is that the football team has to beat Notre Dame and the zebras...
Jewell Loyd and Michaela Mabrey scored 19 points each Saturday to lead No. 6 Notre Dame to a 99-50 victory over UNC Wilmington in the season opener for both teams.
Despite playing without injured senior forward Natalie Achonwa, Notre Dame dominated the boards, outrebounding UNCW 52-24. Freshman forward Taya Reimer led with 12 rebounds, followed by Loyd with 11.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Minnesota Gophers men's hockey squad got some revenge Saturday night, posting a hardfought, 5-4 victory at Notre Dame.
A night after enduring a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Fighting Irish, the Gophers grinded out a win Saturday thanks in large part to Hudson Fasching, who produced a pair of goals.
The top-ranked Gophers (6-1-1), got the game-winning...
In case you missed it, Notre Dame defensive end Stephon Tuitt was ejected in the second quarter of tonight’s game against Pittsburgh for violating the controversial “targeting rule” instituted this year. To say that Irish fans disagree with the decision would be putting it lightly. Former ND star basketball Jack Cooley had this to say about it on Twitter – he didn’t mince...
Notre Dame took on the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday night, and it appears that the Fighting Irish’s Bryan Rust has been taking notes from Pavel Datsyuk. Rust showed off some silky smooth mitts and scored this filthy goal after dangling around the Gophers.

Notre Dame's BCS dreams ended Saturday night at Heinz Field. Must frustrating were the myriad opportunities they had to reach out and grab them.
