WSU’s Class is 10th in the Pac-12 Mike Leach‘s first year at WSU was full of disappointment and controversy. Rather than the beginning of his tenure, it was more of a segment on “cleaning house,” and after a very forgettable 2012 campaign, Leach and his Washington State Cougars look to bounce back in his second season. The Cougars recruiting class is only ranked 10th in the conference, but that is due in large part to the elite recruiting classes above them. Leach has brought in a lot of talent, as well as some steals under the radar. Here are my top-five signings in the class of 2013. 5. Robert Lewis – RB/WR – South East High School, CA Robert Lewis is a 4-star recruit out of California with a ton of speed. His highlight reels are mainly of kick returns, but they nevertheless broadcast his breakaway burners and his elusiveness in the open field. Lewis reminds me of Ricky Galvin, a scat-back who can also be utilized in the slot in Leach’s offense. At 5’10″, 160 pounds, Lewis will likely red shirt in order to bulk up. But when he does step foot on the field, just sit back and watch the fireworks. 4. Daquawn Brown – CB – Dorsey High School, CA A 3-star recruit out of LA, Daquawn Brown is one of the more fitting players when you consider the team’s desperate need for a cover corner. Brown is a very athletic corner with great hands and a sure tackler – something you cannot say about the other cornerbacks on the roster. His highlight reel shows his ability to jump routes and his potency in the open field. 3. Tyler Bruggman – QB – Brophy Prep, AZ The highest-heralded recruit in the class, Tyler Bruggman has a lot to love. He is comfortable in the shotgun, he has great pocket awareness and he has a lightning-quick release. Wonder why Leach loves him… While the QB battle may in fact be between experienced players Connor Halliday and Austin Apodaca, Bruggman definitely will compete for the starting job and has a very bright future. 2. Paulo Lepua – DT – Narbonne High School, CA One of the more overlooked recruits, Paulo Lepua may be the biggest steal of the class. Known for his motor and surprising combination of size and speed, Lepua blew scouts’ minds with 26 sacks in 2012 , making a combined total of 40 in his final two seasons. Lepua will likely be an instant contributor on the defensive line - one of the many areas of concern for the Cougars. 1. Vince Mayle – WR – Sierra College, CA The story and excitement surrounding Vince Mayle makes him my top signee for the team. Mayle is a ju-co transfer from Sierra College in California, but his story only gets better from there. Having never played wide receiver before, Mayle was a basketball player at Sierra. He played football in high school, but he played running back and linebacker – averaging 9.18 yards per carry, 27.18 yards per catch, and led the team with 12 sacks. Mayle played basketball immediately out of high school in ’09 and ’10. Then his mother was sick, so he left school for the ’10-’11 year. When he came back, he didn’t have enough units to play so he had to sit out. Finally, in his first year as a wide receiver, Mayle shocked the nation with incredible statistics: catching 61 passes for 984 yards and 16 touchdowns. Mayle claims the position came naturally to him, and his numbers don’t defer. He has the ability to be the red zone target the Cougs need, and also a big-time playmaker in the open field. All in all, a great class under Leach with many more to come. Go Cougs! CLICK HERE CHECK OUT THE COUGARS BLOG IN OUR CLUBHOUSE TODAY AT NWSB!
