Thanks to defense, Beavers survive another week

Oregon State overcomes a shaky game by the offense and holds off Washington State 19-6, moving to 4-0 on the season.

Love ‘em Defensive Play

There’s no win without the defense, as they put together an amazing game against a strong passing attack. It was a huge step forward after last week’s performance against Arizona.

Scott Crichton was a monster, creating tons of chaos on the line. He finished the game with four solo tackles and three sacks.

Jordan Poyer had the best game of his career, snagging three interceptions, four tackles and one deflection. He was aided in the secondary by the return of Anthony Watkins, who had an interception and three tackles.

Though he didn’t have gaudy stats, Michael Doctor might have been the Beaver’s best tool on D. He finished the day with only three tackles, but was in on every play. I really liked what I saw out of the junior linebacker.

Markus Wheaton

I was really impressed by Markus Wheaton in this game.

It’s no secret that Sean Mannion and the offensive line were not at their best in this one. That had an effect on everybody’s stats, except Wheaton.

The senior wideout managed to turn in another fantastic game, catching nine passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. He also had two rushes for nine yards.

Wheaton continues to play at a high level, and he put together a gem when everyone else was struggling. He came through big on Saturday.

The running game

Oregon State only had 100 yards on the ground, so it’s easy to overlook how big of a role they played in the win.

The rushing attack kept the Beavers going all game long. Storm Woods came alive in the second half, and finished his day with 54 yards on 15 carries. He sat out most of the first half while struggling with an injury.

The man of the hour was fullback Tyler Anderson. He’s made some big plays this season, but the WSU game was his best. He finished with 26 yards on two carries with one touchdown—already his second of the season.

Hate ‘em Mannion’s tough day

Sean Mannion finally struggled, putting together his worst game of the season.

For the first time this year, Mannion completed less than 60% of his passes with a season low 270 yards, and a season high three interceptions.

One and a half of the interceptions weren’t his fault. The “one”, was a perfect pass to Brandin Cooks which bounced off Cook’s body into an opposing player’s arms.

The “half” occurred when Mannion rolled out of the pocket and tossed a throw away pass under heavy pressure. It was a bad decision, but the o-line played a part.

This was a tough game for the sophomore, but he did his best to recover from a rusty first half. I just hope there aren’t more like this in the future.

Special teams

Special teams has been an issue for the Beavers all season long. While the kicking game has been strong, the return game has stunk.

Once again, Oregon State couldn’t get anything going with their returns. They had a combined 57 yards, with some really bad kickoff returns.

Trevor Romaine did miss an extra point, which could have been a difference maker with how close this one was.

Offensive line meltdown

The Beavers allowed three sacks, and we’re useless against Travis Long.

A big issue was reading the defense. They couldn’t do anything against the blitz and seemed totally fooled. Luckily, it didn’t make a difference with holding the running lanes—but it certainly effected the passing game.

Center Isaac Seumalo was the most lost in this one. He wasn’t physically outmatched,  but missed his blocks far too often. With BYU on the horizon, that needs to change.
