While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com. Leading off, Michael Citro at Eleven Warriors has a nice write-up on Buckeyes running back Carlos Hyde, who is looking for a huge senior year, “All the skeptics who thought a power running back couldn’t thrive in an Urban Meyer offense were proven completely wrong last season, as Carlos Hyde rumbled for 970 yards and 16 touchdowns on just 185 carries. That’s an average of 5.2 yards per carry against defenses that were mostly designed to stop running plays and ignore passing plays. And power backs don’t get much more powerful than Carlos Hyde.” [Eleven Warriors] Later today, I’ll have an article on the Tribe and WAR values, but what is the proper replacement level? Hardball Times writer Dave Studeman attempts to explain it, “Meanwhile, there’s a rumor in the air that the Fangraphs and Baseball Reference folks are going to sit down here and hash out a common replacement level for their Wins Above Replacement stats. There are lots of differences between the FG and BRef versions of WAR, but replacement level seems like the easiest one to iron out. I guess that’s a good thing, though I’ve never been bothered by having different replacement levels. In fact, I think it’s a good thing. I guess I’m in the minority on that, however. So, let’s entertain the question of the day: what should the new consensual replacement level be?” [Hardball Times] Also at Eleven Warriors, the writers hand out some Ohio State and Big Ten hardware. Some really intersting stuff in here and good timing with Ohio State’s final home game this afternoon, “I’m not sure any of the first-team spots are all that debatable. I suppose it could be argued that a tad of homerism might be in play when it comes to Craft but as I scan the other names out there, nobody jumps off the page as a likely replacement. If I was forced to subtract Craft from the team, I’d go big and add Adreian Payne. Even in a bit of a frustrating league season, Craft still managed to rank 3rd in assists per game (4.2), 7th in free throw shooting (80.4%), 1st in steals (2.2) and 3rd in assists-to-turnover ratio (2.1). ” [Eleven Warriors] Could the Indians be looking to sign Jason Kipnis to an extension as they did with Carlos Santana last season? Jason Lukehart thinks so at Let’s Go Tribe, “Absent from the list of eleven players was Jason Kipnis, the team’s best pre-arbitration player. It’s entirely possible that this means nothing. It seems to me though, that another possibility is the team is involved in negotiations on a multi-year extension with Kipnis’ people, a deal that might cover his arbitration years and possibly even buy out a year or two of free agency. There hasn’t been any word of such negotiations, but wasn’t any word before the Chicago White Sox and Chris Sale agreed yesterday on what could be a seven-year deal. There wasn’t any word before today, when the St. Louis Cardinals and Allen Craig announced they’ve agreed to a five-year extension. These things often fly under the radar. What might a Kipnis extension look like???” [Let's Go Tribe] Dawgs By Nature and Mike Krupka take a look at potential Browns draft targets. Today it was Missouri defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson, “Sheldon Richardson is an explosive, high motor, athletic, freak of a DL standing at 6’3″ and tipping the scale near 300lbs. Proof that he’s a freak? Richardson recently turned in a 4.82 and 4.72 40 yard dash at his pro day and his measureables at the combine weren’t too shabby either putting up 30 reps, 116″ broad jump and a 32 inch vertical.” [Dawgs By Nature]
