Found October 05, 2012 on Friarhood:
After signing Nick Hundley to a contract extension (3years/9M) and trading Wade LeBlanc for John Baker it appeared that the Padres were on solid footing heading into 2012. Although Baker proved to be a solid backup, Hundley struggled. After putting up career highs in 2011, Hundley was never able to get on track in 2012. Dropping from .288/.347/.477 in 2011 to .157/.219/.245Enter Yasmani Grandal. The young backstop acquired in the Mat Latos trade provided a huge offensive boost. After hitting four homeruns in his first six games, Grandal established himself as one of the stronger bats in the lineup and hit primarily 4th and 5th in the lineup.Overall the catching position for the Padres was a roller coaster. Although Grandal did over-achieve, Hundley hit well under his career numbers. Baker didn't provide a lot of pop, but he was serviceable.Grade: CYasmani Grandal YearGPAABRH2B3BHRRBISBCSBBSOBAOBPSLGOPS 2012 60 226 192 28 57 7 1 8 36 0 0 31 39 .297 .394 .469 .863 Nick H...

Strong 2nd half, Headley's season give Padres hope

A strong second half, fueled by Chase Headley's breakout season, showed that there's promise for the low-budget San Diego Padres. That hope was strengthened when the Oakland Athletics, who had baseball's lowest player payroll, won the AL West. Says Padres general manager Josh Byrnes: ''We want to be that team.'' The Padres, who had the second-lowest...

Padres Brass Indicates Fences will be Moved

In a recent tweet via Bernie Wilson of the AP, it appears, it's only a matter of time until the Padres adjust the fences. div.twitterditto253938256423575554 { background: #C0DEED url( no-repeat; padding: 20px; } div.twitterditto253938256423575554 a { color: #0084B4; } div.twitter-inner-ditto253938256423575554 { background: #fff...

Carlos Quentin Injury News: Padres' LF Has Surgery

Carlos Quentin missed over a month early in the season because of arthroscopic surgery on his right knee during spring training. When he returned, the San Diego Padres were a different team. Quentin added a power bat in the lineup, added protection, and brought leadership. He helped the Padres to a winning home record and a winning record in the second half of this season. However...

Daily Friar 10.4.12

Well there you have it folks. The Padres 2012 season has come to an end. Some might not see it as a successful season, but in my eyes (and the eyes of a few others) I think it kind of was in a way. Let's start with the record. The "experts" said the Padres would only win 72 games this season, instead they won 76. Not a huge increase, but it was more than we were "...

Daily Friar 10.5.12

As the playoffs get started, the Padres offseason begins. I wouldn't expect signinficant news to come out in the next few weeks, but I will keep my eye out for anything to come. It's kind of frowned upon to make breaking news during the playoffs because Bud Selig wants all eyes on the winning teams. So even though the season is over, the Daily Friar carries on each day even...

Daily Friar 10.6.12

I wonder how long the new playoff scheme will continue after that debacle last night. Let's break it down: a blown call in a game that shouldn't really have to be played. The Braves were 6 games better than the Cardinals, and yet the Braves don't even get a chance at the divisional series. So let's move on to some Padres news, which isn't a whole lot. Because...
