The Philadelphia Phillies have signed reliever Mike Adams. The Phillies signing of Mike Adams could easily make their bullpen the best in the majors. Early signs from Adams in bullpen sessions sound as if he is fully recovered from last seasons surgery. Adams who had a condition called thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) that caused weakness in his pitching arm and numbness had surgery removing his top rib. Prior to last season, Adams was spectacular in Texas, posting a 1.71 ERA from 2008-2011. Returning to his prior self, what bullpen would be better in the majors? Making Papelbon that much better in 2013, Adams health and success can make this possible. Papelbon who pitched well in his first season with the Phillies also had a career high in innings pitched. Though it wasn’t often, he was used in the eighth and also in games where the Phillies were losing. Both are not part of the role of a closer and negatively impact the psyche, which go beyond that one game. Keeping Papelbon in the honest role of closer should produce better numbers than last season ( 2.44 era and 38 saves). Chad Durbin to return Chad Durbin who had a comeback year with the Atlanta Braves last season also had a career high in innings pitched. Durbin who was a workhorse out of the bullpen posted an era in the low 3′s and bringing providing the same numbers in Philly pinstripes, Bastardo can be the left-handed specialist he was signed to be. Another lefty who should make the roster, Jeremy Horst. In 32 appearances with the Phillies last season Horst did not look like a player with 12 games MLB experience. Posting a 1.15 ERA in 32 games and striking out 40, Horst could be the left-handed specialist or the final piece of the best bullpen in the majors.Similar Posts: Phillies to sign Durbin in a move that strengthens bullpen Phillies Odds and Ends: Halladay, Kendrick and the new bullpen Is 2013 the last chance for aging Phillies?
