I've had my problems with Jonathan Broxton as the Dodgers closer, but usually think he does a fine job. But this ought to be enough to get him permanently demoted from the job: His first pitch to Stairs was about 100 mph. But it was also outside the strike zone. Said Stairs: "I thought, 'Oh Lord.' " Said Broxton: "I never want to give it up to a guy off the bench." The next pitch was a ball. Then another ball. Then another ball. Said Stairs: "He just couldn't throw strikes." Said Broxton: "I wasn't going to give him anything to hit." "I wasn't going to give him anything to hit"? Dude, this is a bench player with one at-bat in the series. You call yourself a closer and you're afraid of Matt "The Wonder Hamster" Stairs? That's just damned embarrassing. Otherwise: Broxton's choke erased a really well-pitched game, and a solid outing by the Dodgers' offense that should have ended in a win. They try to stave off a Phillies date with the eventual winner of the Angels/Yanks series...

Broxton lets a big one slip away for Dodgers

PHILADELPHIA -- Part of being a closer, the most mentally taxing job in baseball and perhaps all of sports, is knowing that eventually it will be your turn to fail. Sooner or later, a ball is hit where they ain't, or an outfielder loses a ball in the lights, or a hitter who knew exactly what you were about to do rips a game-winning double into the gap, and then you lose. And when...

Game 4 Disaster Strikes Broxton Again

No one will ever know if it was the 18-minute wait for the top of the ninth to play out in the cold or if it was the specter of Matt Stairs and his series-changing 2008 home run in Game 4, but in an eery replay, Jonathan Broxton served up a two-out, two-run, game-winning double to Jimmy Rollins after walking Stairs that cut the heart out of the Dodgers chances.

Jimmy!

Matt Stairs seems to be Jonathan Broxton's kryptonite. Down to their final three outs heading into the bottom half of the ninth, the Phillies chances looked bleak. Broxton got Ibanez to ground out but then quickly walked Matt Stars and hit Carlos Ruiz. This team, never one to give up, had a fightin' chance in the bottom of the ninth with two on but Greg Dobbs lined out to put the...

The Dodgers pitchers who live in infamy

Dodgers reliever Jonathan Broxton has joined an unfortunate fraternity that also includes Tom Niedenfuer, Terry Forster and Ralph Branca. At least he has a chance to redeem himself. Jonathan Broxton descended to a place on Monday night visited by only a select group of...

All That Awaits Phillies Is Chilled Bubbly

by Jay MariottiFiled under: MLBPHILADELPHIA -- The radar-gun readings were frightening, like something from an I-95 speed chase between the cops and a fugitive. Take this 101-mile-per-hour fastball, said Jonathan Broxton. Or how about this smoke at a mere 99? Or 98, 96, a slider at 93? The man goes 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds, give or take an In-N-Out Burger, and the question seemed...

J-Roll Comes Up Huge for Reigning Champs

With two gone in the ninth and his team down by a run, Jimmy Rollins lined a 99 mph fastball from All-Star closer Jonathan Broxton for a two-run double to help his Philadelphia Phillies rally over the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 Monday night. Make that a 3-1 lead in the NLCS for the Phightin Phils, who now need just one win to punch their World Series ticket.Rollins, who struggled much...

NLCS Game 4: Much Joy In The City Of Brotherly Love

Random thoughts/ramblings/game notes on yesterday’s Phillies game -How :much fun must it be to be a Phillies fan right now? As most of you know, April through September, I’m a (certifiable) but ardent fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The reason I keep following them every year is the hope that someday they’ll put together a run like the Phillies are on right now. Enjoy it Philadelphia...

Keep Hope Alive!

It's a new day in Los Angeles, the sun is shining, the birds are singing. And even thought the bitterness of last night's defeat lingers in one's mouth like cigars after a long night of scotch-drinking, already the pain is beginning to subside. And in the spirit of the eternally optimistic Jon Weisman over at Dodger Thoughts, I still hold out hope that we can pull this NLCS off...

NLCS Game 5 Thread @ Quakers, 5p

A big tip o' the fitted cap to Erin at Robots Took My Medicine for those kickass buttons pictured above, as well as her piece, "A Home Away from Home", which could also be called "Your Guide to SoSG Game Threads." Vicente Padilla (0-0, 1.23) vs. Cole Hamels (1-0, 6.75). What? Another Game Thread? That's right, the season didn't end Monday night — it just felt like it. There...

For Phillies, It Is Deja Vu All Over Again

In the end, it was a lot like 2008, when the Phillies beat the Dodgers in five games. Once again, Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton stared down Matt Stairs in Game 4 and blinked. He walked Stairs on four pitches...Read the full article on Bleacher Report...
