Probably the most significant minor league rehab assignment this season for the New York Yankees has nothing to do with the two Alex Rodriguez or Derek Jeter. Sure, they are the two most expensive players on the Yankees roster who have struggled to comeback from injuries suffered last season, but someone who has yet to play a game for the team since coming over in a trade is much more important to the Yankees future. A-Rod has had the opportunity to see him and up close, and the Yankees beleaguered star told the New York Post that Michael Pineda is a ‘very special kid.’ A year and half ago, the Yankees pulled a trigger on a trade that certainly wasn’t a popular one with their fans. They sent away their best hitting prospect in Jesus Montero, to land a young pitcher from the Seattle Mariner in Pineda. He had a very solid rookie season, but Montero, to most Yankees fans, was the first big time hitter the Yanks had in their system since forever. It was booed even more after Pineda reportedly showed up overweight to Spring Training, and then struggled in his appearances. But shortly after camp broke, it [...]

Are Yankees headed towards rebuilding?

After starting the second-half with a 5-2 loss to the Red Sox in the opener of their three-game, weekend series on Friday night, the New York Yankees ended their three-game skid with a 4-2 win in Boston on Saturday afternoon. Now 52-45 and in fourth place, six-games out of first, the Yankees continue to somehow keep pace with the pack and stay

Yankees Game 97: Kuroda solid in win

(Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images) New York Yankees 5 — Boston Red Sox 2   Hiroki Kuroda evens the series with the Red Sox in today’s 5-2 win. The Yankees would have  Brett Gardner reach on an (ill-advised) slide into first for a single. When Ichiro Suzuki lined out to...

New York Yankees place Derek Jeter on 15 day DL

Derek Jeter (Photo Credit: Elsa/Getty Images) After playing a mere game for the New York Yankees this season, Derek Jeter has once again found himself on the disabled list. The Bronx Bombers placed the 39-year-old shortstop on the 15 day DL. Such a move comes from Jeter suffering a right quad strain in his season debut July 11 in an 8-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Jeter...

He strained his right quad in his first game back with New York last week after being out all season with a broken left ankle. The Yankees had waited to make a decision, using the four days of the All-Star break for the shortstop to receive treatment. But with New York set to...

A-Rod on why he won't quit baseball: 'This is my first love'

Alex Rodriguez opened up and explained why the New York Yankees third baseman won't give up on rejoining the team this season knowing he'll be facing angry fans, declining skills, the over-zealous media, an MLB steroid investigation and possible suspension. In a revealing interview with New York Post reporter Joel Sherman, the soon-to-be 38-year-old A-Rod explains the...

Rodriguez gets to stretch legs at Triple-A

Alex Rodriguez rumbled around first base after ripping a liner to the left-field wall in the eighth inning last night only to be thrown out easily at second base. Rodriguez said he’s still rounding into playing form ahead of Monday’s scheduled return to the Yankees, but admitted he’s not going to get much more nimble. “If you were watching on TV, I promise it wasn’t in...

Yankees place Derek Jeter on 15-day disabled list

The decision has been made. The New York Yankees will place shortstop Derek Jeter on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, a source has confirmed to MLBDailyDish's Chris Cotillo. The 39-year old strained his right quad in his season debut last week against the Kansas City Royals, and has been day-to-day ever since. Jeter, who missed the first half of the season due to the ankle...

The New York Yankees, Now With Less Jeter

Normally a Red Sox-Yankees match-up has that Clash of the Titans vibe around it. But right now, as the Yanks come to Fenway six games behind us in the East, with Jeter on the shelf and 84 year-old Andy Pettitte starting in the opener, I almost feel bad for New York. Not that bad, mind you. Just kinda bad. During last year’s “lost season,” the Sox went into the All Star break...

Preview: Yankees @ Red Sox (7/21/13)

CC Sabathia (9-8, 4.07 ERA) is in charge of the rubber match against the Sox tonight as he goes up against Ryan Dempster (5-8, 4.24 ERA). Sabathia is trying to rebound from what he called a “terrible” first half. He’s trying to fix an arm slot issue from his last start. He’s 1-1 against Boston this year, including beating them with 7 1/3 innings of one run ball back on May...

Jeter’s no lock to face Sox tonight

Just because Derek Jeter will be in Boston tonight doesn’t guarantee the Yankees captain is ready to return to action. According to general manager Brian Cashman, Jeter will meet the Yankees at Fenway Park and it will be decided whether he will play against the Red Sox, will remain on the active roster but not play or will land back on the disabled list. “I couldn’t tell...

Four Real? Red Sox vs Yankees 7-20-13

Jan-Christian Sorensen Contributing Writer Turnabout, as they say, is fair play. It’s cold comfort, but it was certainly the case on Saturday at Fenway Park as the New York Yankees followed up their Friday night loss to the Sox by recording a 5-2 victory in the second game of the three-game stand. With the Tampa Bay Rays edging Toronto 4-3 earlier in the day, Boston's lead...

Rivalry Renewed in Beantown

This weekend, the Red Sox and Yankees renew their rivalry with a three-game set at Fenway Park, New York’s first visit to Boston this season. The Yankees are truly having a remarkable season (51-44, 6.0 GB in the AL East) when you consider the injuries to Mark Teixeira (wrist surgery), Curtis Granderson (fractured knuckle), Alex Rodriguez (right hip), Kevin Youkilis (herniated...
