Surely you’ve heard by now that Mexico and Canada got into a brawl yesterday during the World Baseball Classic, and in the video above, you can see all the incidents that led up to the fight.
Basically, it was a bunch of physical but legal plays … yet it was a bunt single that set everything off.
Because of the way the rules were setup, Canada just beating Mexico wasn’t enough. The tiebreaking format provides incentive for teams to run up the score and claw for every run. Just ask Korea, who was 2-1 in the tournament but is watching at home now, nevertheless.
As such, with their fate still very much up in the air, Canada bunted for a hit in the ninth inning while up six, which is when Luis Cruz did this:
So yeah, the guy bunted, Cruz obviously had no idea what was going on in terms of the context of the play, felt offended, and told his pitcher to drill a guy, which the pitcher did … on the third attempt, even after being warned.

PHOENIX The Dodgers, who already have a big Latino fan base, may have picked up even more Mexican fans Friday night.
Dodgers Luis Cruz and Adrian Gonzalez, playing third base and first base and batting third and fourth for Mexico, drove in all five runs as Mexico defeated the United States, 5-2, in a World Baseball Classic game at Chase Field.
Mexico, upset by Italy in its opener...
Zack Greinke was scratched from Monday’s scheduled start and was flown to Los Angeles to have his right elbow examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Greinke first reported soreness in his elbow last week but was able to throw his bullpen session on Friday with no issues. Sunday the soreness returned after he threw another session and that caused him to fly to Los Angeles on an extremely...
Saturday was an ugly day for the World Baseball Classic and more specifically, Dodgers' infielder Luis Cruz. But in a somewhat surprising twist, Cruz won't face any disciplinary action for his part in the brawl with team Canada.
From Major League Baseball:
"Because at least one club -- and potentially both -- will not advance to
the second round, WBCI has determined...
After reporting forearm tightness to the Dodgers, it’s been relayed that Zack Greinke is now dealing with elbow discomfort, which will force him to miss his latest Spring Training outing.
“Doctors have ruled out serious injuries such as ligament damage,” wrote Gurnick, who called the move precautionary. “Greinke has told the club he’s dealt with similar elbow issues in...
Corey Seager is the young Dodgers' prospect I've decided to Super-Collect. Well, he and Jerry Sands, but of course Jerry is no longer a Dodger. Anyhoo, I think Seager has the potential and raw talent to be an excellent player and I've accordingly begun to pursue as many of his autographs as possible.I was recently able to land what is thus far the pinnacle of my collection...
PHOENIX -- The Dodgers sent pitcher Zack Greinke to Los Angeles on Monday for an examination of his right elbow.
Greinke complained of irritation in the elbow while throwing on Sunday. The Dodgers sent him to Dr. Neal El Attrache for what the team called a "precautionary exam" ordered out of an "abundance of caution."
The Dodgers signed Greinke for 147 million...
PHOENIX (AP) -- A fierce brawl that saw Alfredo Aceves and several players throw nasty punches erupted Saturday in the ninth inning of Canada's 10-3 romp over Mexico in the World Baseball Classic in a melee that also involved fans.
The fights broke out after Canada's Rene Tosoni was hit by a pitch from Arnold Leon with Canada leading 9-3 at Chase Field, home of the Arizona...
Chris Capuano pitched four solid innings and Ramon Castro hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers before their split-squad game against the Cincinnati Reds was rained out with Los Angeles leading 3-1 on Friday night.
The game was called after four innings, the second rainout of the day for both teams. Earlier at Scottsdale Stadium, rain and hail ended a Dodgers-Giants game in the second...
Baseball fans love to talk about clutch plays and clutch players, and Dodgers fans are no exception, but like with a pitcher’s best and worst pitches, there tends to be a lack of evidence presented. As such, I decided to find some basis for clutch plays and clutch players, courtesy of the WPA and Clutch statistics.
Most sabermetric statistics are context neutral — they do...
Matt Kemp had his first two hits of the spring and Clayton Kershaw allowed only two hits in five innings and added an RBI single and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 6-1 Sunday.
Kemp, who was 0 for 11 with five strikeouts in his first four Cactus League games, singled in the first inning, walked in the fourth and added an RBI single to score Dee Gordon during a...
Hanley Ramirez batted .342 in 2009, winning the National League batting title and finishing second in the MVP voting to an in-his-prime Albert Pujols. Ramirez followed that season up with a .300 average in 2010 and his third consecutive All-Star appearance, but in the two years since he’s batted just .243 and .257 and hasn’t [...]
Dodgers say it's just a precaution as Zack Greinke goes to L.A. for
The new Dodgers owners said they’d spend, and it appears that they will. After last year’s deadline blockbuster, the Dodgers have continued to bring in players and spend recklessly, according to some. Can they overtake the defending champion Giants?

Rickie Weeks had an RBI triple off Hyun-Jim Ryu after Zack Greinke was scratched from his start Monday because of elbow inflammation, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2.
The Dodgers said Greinke was examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache and that an MRI in Arizona last week showed no structural damage. The 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner, signed to a $147 million...
