Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon has plenty to be frustrated about as his team continues to struggle. In the seventh inning Wednesday, with a Rays 4-0 lead against the Cleveland Indians slipping away, he vented against plate umpire Dan Iassogna. There had been an extremely questionable strike-three call against Rays right fielder Matt Joyce in the sixth inning. Then in the seventh, Iassogna called a ball on a pitch Maddon felt was strike three on Cleveland's Jason Kipnis, who went on to single home the tying run as the Indians scored five on six consecutive two-out hits. "Danny Iassogna is a good umpire," Maddon said. "He missed that call. He absolutely blew that call. And that's a big play in tonight's game." Big enough to have changed everything, even though the Rays made plenty of other mistakes in a 10-6 loss. "That's strike three, and all of a sudden the inning is over, and of a sudden everybody's happy," Maddon said....

Rays hope Joyce's return sparks offense

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Matt Joyce fought his way through a torrential rainstorm Monday night, driving into town after a brief rehab assignment in Daytona. It was like a monsoon or something, it was brutal, he said Tuesday afternoon by his locker inside the Tampa Bay Rays clubhouse. I had to slow down to make sure I made it here. Inclement weather aside, Joyce couldnt get back to...

Rays recall Lueke to help bullpen

The Tampa Bay Rays, still feeling the effects from Monday's 15-inning, 5-hour loss to the Oakland Athletics, have called up right-handed reliever Josh Lueke. Lueke was with the Rays coming out of spring training and has an 18.90 ERA in three games with the big league club. The 6-foot-5-inch, 235-pounder was 1-3 with a 4.72 ERA for Triple-A Durham before getting recalled to the...

Price again proves to be Rays' stopper

LHP David Price came to the Tampa Bay Rays' rescue again. After a tough Wednesday night loss, Price stepped up with seven solid shutout innings to lead the Rays to a 6-0 matinee victory and a four-game series split with the Indians. "David was outstanding," manager Joe Maddon said. "He had once again great command of his fastball, started mixing in some other...

Price in peak form as Rays close out Indians

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. David Price donned his green St. Paddys Day ball cap and matching-colored tank top by his locker Thursday afternoon. That seemed like an especially appropriate look considering how Price keeps throwing those lucky sevens, the latest of which helped change the fortunes of the Tampa Bay Rays just when they needed it most. Price pitched seven superb innings...

Tribe hopes to overcome dominant Price

David Price has pitched very well over the last month, and he's been dominant against the Cleveland Indians throughout his career. Perhaps with a chance to become the majors' first 13-game winner, the Tampa Bay Rays left-hander hopes to continue his current run of success while winning his fifth consecutive start against the Indians on Thursday at Tropicana Field. Just past...

Indians 2, Rays 4: On Despair, Plastic Hips, and the Potential Wisdom of Rick Manning

7:06 PM – Three things that seem true: “Matt Moore is Tampa Bay’s starter for this game.” “Matt Moore pitches primarily with his left arm.” “The Indians will lose this game.” There’s a syllogism hiding in there somewhere, just waiting to be discovered. 7:30 PM – After Moore sends the Indians down in order in the top of the first, Josh Tomlin gets to work. Let’s...

Rays 6 Indians 0: David Price Is Good at Baseball, Aaron Cunningham Isn’t

This is going to be one of those recaps that writes itself. Really, I could sum it up in a few short sentences (but what fun would that be!): David Price is a great young pitcher. He is left-handed. He entered the game 4-0 with a 2.01 ERA in five career starts against the Indians. The Tribe is not exactly what you would call an offensive juggernaut. Left-handed pitchers have little...

Tribe's 5-run 7th inning too much for Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Carlos Santana hit a three-run homer during a five-run seventh inning and the Cleveland Indians rallied for a 10-6 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night. Shin-Soo Choo and Asdrubal Cabrera hit two-out singles off Kyle Farnsworth (0-2) before Jason Kipnis' RBI single against Jake McGee tied it at 4. After Michael Brantley had a run-scoring...

Rays jump on Tomlin, Indians early in loss

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Josh Tomlin was doomed by a bad first inning. Matt Moore won despite control issues, Carlos Pena homered and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Cleveland Indians 4-2 on Tuesday night. Pena hit a two-run homer and Luke Scott had an RBI triple off Tomlin (5-6) as the Rays took a 3-0 lead in the first. "It was tough putting guys in a hole like that,"...
