Kyle Kendrick, for varying reasons has been persona non grata in Philadelphia for quite some time. After getting off to a solid major league start in 2007, Kendrick was bounced to the minors in 2009. In 2010 he competed for a job in the Phillies starting rotation, only to be thrown into the bullpen. Same for 2011, aside from some spot starts here and there.

All the while Kendrick has alternated horrendous outings with performances that have offered flashes of hope.

When Kendrick continued that trend in 2012, Manager Charlie Manuel decided to have a chat with the 28 year old. Kendrick lacked aggressiveness on the mound at times, and rather than throwing strikes showed a propensity to nibble at the corners. He’d fall behind hitters and then have to throw fastballs to catch up in the count. Many of those fastballs wound up going for hits which led to runs.

Since Manuel sat Kendrick down in August, he has been excellent for the Phillies. No longer has Kendrick nibbled at corners, but has instead challenged hitters and gotten ahead of them. His change up has been a go to pitch, and Kendrick, not known for being a strike out pitcher is suddenly racking them up.

Kendrick has done a solid job for the Phillies and has really had an amazing second half. His ERA over the past 5 starts is 1.78 and he’s won 4 of his those starts.

With Kendrick finding his groove, Halladay finally returning to health, Hamels being Hamels and Lee starting to show signs of his old self, things could get mighty interesting in a hurry. The Phillies are 70-71 as they continue their series with Marlins tonight and trail a wild card spot by only 5 games with 21 to go.

Kyle Kendrick may not be the star of this Phillies rotation, or even a permanent member of it until recently, but his efforts are big reason the Phillies suddenly find themselves playing meaningful baseball as the leaves start to turn.
