An old era has ended for the Philadelphia Phillies, and now a new one has begun.  For the past few years, we considered the Phillies as a very good team, a team who has won 5 consecutive National League East Pennants, and has just won the 2008 World Series.  A team that are contenders.  Now this has all passed us, and a new era has begun for this ballclub.

After the Philadelphia Phillies traded Shane Victorino, “The Flyin Hawaiian “, a long-time Phillies favorite, and Hunter Pence, a guy they brought to bring energy and a bat, as a Phillies fan, it hurt to see these players go.  I understand what the management needed to do.  The way things are looking now, the Philadelphia Phillies are no longer contenders for the World Series.  If you look at their roster, almost all of them are aging.  Chase is getting older and dealing with a horrible knee-injury, imagesCA24K8SA An Old Era Has Ended, A New One Has Begun  will never be the same after having surgery on an Achilles injury, Jimmy Rollins isn’t the player he used to be, Placido Polanco is a great fielder but really doesn’t bring any offense to the team, John Mayberry Jr. is inconsistent, and the list goes on and on.  This team has so many missing pieces and problems.  It’s going to take the Philadelphia Phillies a while to fix.  I guess everyone eventually has to feel the pain of what it’s like being a Houston Astros fan.  Right now, the Phillies record is 49-60, it will just be a struggle to win 80 games for them…if that.  They are sitting in last place in the NL East, one year removed from where they won 102 games and clinched first place in the division. This team has really changed and it will never be the same as the 2007-2011 seasons.  The Washington Nationals are the new sheriffs in town.  The younger teams are rising, like the Los Angeles Angels, Washington Nationals, and Pittsburgh Pirates, and if you look at the New York Yankees, they will be around for a very long time.  The National League is getting better and better and harder to compete in.  There are so many great teams in the National League, as well as in all of MLB.  While all of this is happening, the Philadelphia Phillies are really falling apart.

An old era has ended for the Philadelphia Phillies., and a new one has begun.

Hamels Wills Phillies To Victory Over Braves

Cole Hamels decided the Phillies weren't going to lose tonight. (AP) There was a baseball game in Philadelphia tonight, but it was in name only. For, you see, it was less a game than a one-man pitching showcase, headlined by Cole Hamels and his nine shutout innings. His performance willed the Phillies to a victory over the Braves, 3-0, in a game where the runs scored will become...

Phillies Bullpen Taking Shape as Raul Valdes Returns; Hector Luna Back to AAA

The Phillies very serviceable lefty reliever Raul Valdes has been activated from the disabled list.  To make room, Hector Luna heads back to AAA. The Phillies bullpen seems to be  taking shape.  I would prefer Kendrick remain in the bullpen over B.J. Rosenberg, but for now the Phillies relief corps looks like this: Jonathan Papelbon (CL) Josh Lindblom (RH setup) Antonio...

Philllies Add a Catcher to Help the Organization Carlos Ruiz's Absence; Erik Kratz Sticking Around

Erik Kratz needs to stick around while Carlos Ruiz rehabs his ankle injury and one more injury would leave the Phillies very depleted, so the Phillies added former Cubs, Athletics, and Orioles catcher Jake Fox on a minor league contract.  AAA Lehigh Valley has both Sebastian Valle and John Suomi, but neither would be a realistic option should Brian Schneider or Erik Kratz sustain...

His Phillies Return is Only Eight Games, but Domonic Brown is Impressive

Domonic Brown was the untouchable.  The Phillies would not trade him.  Not for Cliff Lee.  Not for Roy Halladay.  He debuted to a standing ovation in 2010 as the Phillies entered an offensive funk down the stretch.  But soon the magic died. Brown hit just .210 in his late season call-up in 2010, and Spring Training 2011 before there ever was a Hunter Pence Brown broke his...

Not the time to fire Charlie Manuel

Theory of Relativity.  Skinny jeans on guys.  Nicholas Cage getting paid to do movies. Here’s another thing that makes no sense: fire Charlie Manuel. The Phillies' number 3 and 4 hitters were injured for the first three months, Roy Halladay joined the DL for over a month, they have a minor league bullpen, and you want to blame…Charlie Manuel? The manager...

Hamels Ends Losing Streak Against Braves

It appears that Cole Hamels has found his groove again, and just in time to end a long Phillies losing streak against the division rival Braves. Prior to Tuesday night, the Braves had won 7 straight against the struggling Phils. But once Hamels snapped out of his pitching slump, he made easy work out of Atlanta’s line-up. He pitched a 5-hit, complete game shut-out with 6 strike...

The Phillies Owe Fans Something in Addition to a Hunter Pence Bobblehead on July 21st.

Courtesy phillies.com When the Hunter Pence trade went down, many people said, "Not until I get my bobblehead first!"   The Phillies responded by declaring that the Hunter Pence bobblehead night is still on as planned.  My first thought is that I would have liked to have one still to add to my bobblehead collection, that is missing none of the popular giveaways since...

FP Santangelo - Ignorant Juicer

FP Santangelo is apparently the Andy Martino of baseball broadcasting.FP, the Gnats 'color man' on MASN had this exchange with lead announcer Bob Carpenter.FP - [The Phillies] sellout streak ended tonight, apparently. 257 games.Bob - That's a great run.FP - They're gonna have to take back their own ballpark.Bob - Now that is funny.[pause] We took our's back.Zing...

Braves Dismantle Phils Pitching, Win 12-6.

Final: Phillies 6, Braves 12. WP: Chad Durbin (4-1, 3.07 ERA) LP: Antonio Bastardo (2-4, 5.45 ERA) Tonight's game featured a series of highs-and-lows for the Philadelphia Phillies. The bottom of the 1st was positive in the fact that Jimmy Rollins picked up his 40th career leadoff home run, in which he homered off of opposing starter Tim Hudson to the first row in right field...

Shane Victorino already on Dodgers teammates about arriving at park earlier

Shane Victorino has been with the Dodgers for less than a week, but it looks like he’s already taking on a leadership role with the team. According to Arash Markazi of ESPNLA, Victorino had already been in the team’s clubhouse for over an hour on Sunday prior to the team’s game at 4:10pm ET when a few of his teammates arrived. Victorino reportedly pointed to an imaginary watch...

Shane Victorino wants to be a Dodger for a long time

Even though outfielder Shane Victorino has played only five games with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he told his representatives that he wants to resign with the team Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles reports. “I don't want to just be a two-month or three-month rental,” Victorino said. “I want to be here.” According to Saxon, playing for the Dodgers has shown Victorino the advantages...

Shane Victorino to Teammates: "You MFers Better Show Up Earlier"; Shane Wants to Re-Sign With Dodgers

Shane Victorino has already taken a role as a leader in the Dodgers clubhouse.  I missed this on Sunday, but Shane seems to have taken issue with James Loney in the Dodgers' clubhouse, according to ESPN Los Angeles reporter Arash Markazi: If that is the case, consider me impressed.   Also from ESPN Los Angeles, Victorino says that he hopes to re-sign with the Dodgers...

Gwynn is latest victim of Dodgers' roster makeover

The Los Angeles Dodgers have reshaped their roster in the last two weeks, adding five new players via trade. Monday, they cut their second veteran outfielder in five days as Tony Gwynn Jr. was designated for assignment. Gwynn, like Bobby Abreu before him, fell victim to a lack of playing time with the acquisition of Shane Victorino. Gwynn was used often as a defensive replacement...
