The Dodgers' ailing offense took another hit today, as right fielder Andre Ethier left the team's game against the Giants with an oblique injury. Ethier was hurt while sliding into second base in the first inning, attempting to break up a double play. The extent of the injury is currently unknown, but obliques are generally a bad thing to hurt...even the most minor oblique injuries can nag for the entire season.

Los Angeles is a team that an ill-afford another injury to a top hitter. Matt Kemp has played just two games since the middle of May, but he's looking to begin a rehab assignment before the All-Star Break, and possibly be back soon after that. But if the Dodgers are forced to put Ethier on the DL with Kemp....man, this could get ugly. The Dodgers have already lost five games in the standings to the Giants this month, losing 3-0 today to fall into a tie for first in the division.

If you exclude both Kemp and Ethier, the Dodgers' current leader in OPS is catcher AJ Ellis, at .847. Ellis is also the team's home run leader with those two out....and he has a whopping six homers on the season. It's not going to get easier for the Dodgers going into the break either, as they host the Mets and Reds for three games each before traveling to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks in a four game set. Ten games against teams all above .500, with no offense in sight...the Dodgers have to be hoping that Ethier's oblique is fine, and that he won't miss any time. Otherwise, their season could start going downhill quickly.
