The Oakland Athletics have set an American League record for striking out the most in a season. Chris Carter's strikeout in the second inning Wednesday night at Texas was the team's third of the game and 1,325th this season, one more than the Tampa Bay Rays had in 2007. The A's quickly added to that total when Brandon Moss followed with an inning-ending K. Oakland already had four strikeouts through two innings, but also had a 5-3 lead at that point against the AL West leaders. The A's, who have seven games left after Wednesday night, already surpassed their previous strikeout total by more than 100. They had 1,226 in 2008.

Athletics set AL record for striking out the most

The Oakland Athletics have set an American League record for striking out the most in a season. Chris Carter's strikeout in the second inning Wednesday night at Texas was the team's third of the game and 1,325th this season, one more than the Tampa Bay Rays had in 2007. A's pitcher Dallas Braden goes off, nearly ejected from anti-violence rally

Well, this is certainly something. Injured Oakland Athletics pitcher Dallas Braden, who is typically very proud of his upbringing in Stockton, California, was nearly ejected from an anti-violence rally in the town on Wednesday. Braden began to yell at the police chief who was speaking at the rally, claiming that the police in town are lying to people and not doing an adequate job...

Oakland's Moss atones for error with key defensive play

Brandon Moss made a costly two-base error on a hit by Josh Hamilton in the first inning Tuesday, but he more than made up for it later as the Oakland A's edged the Texas Rangers 3-2 in 10 innings. An misplay by Moss in right field led to two unearned runs off Tommy Milone, the only runs the A's left-hander allowed in six innings. Moss erased thoughts of that blunder in...

Slumping OF Reddick not in lineup for Oakland

Slumping outfielder Josh Reddick is not in Oakland's starting lineup against the Texas Rangers. Reddick, who leads the Athletics with 29 home runs and 79 RBIs, is 0 for 27 in his last six games. His batting average has slipped to .242. A's center fielder Coco Crisp is out of the lineup for the seventh game in a row because of an eye infection. Crisp last started on Sept...

Dallas Braden Yells At The Police Now

You may remember Dallas Braden from such 2010 classics as yelling "get off my mound" at Alex Rodriguez, this awesome t-shirt commemorating the event and somehow throwing a perfect game against the Rays. He pitched 18.0 innings in 2011 before losing the year to shoulder surgery. In March 2012, Braden had a little more surgery for a partial rotator cuff tear. Now that his...

From Bud to Beane – We Were Wrong

As a fan it’s practically our job to hate Bud Selig, but say whatever you want to say – his plan has worked. The second playoff spot has created the most interesting September I can remember. Realistically in the AL you have 8 out of 14 teams with less than ten games to go and all still have playoff hopes. None of the division leaders would dare choose to win the wild card rather...

Josh Reddick Hates Fastballs

“Bats, they are sick. I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. I ask Jobu to come, take fear from bats. I offer him cigar, rum. He will come.” — Pedro CerranoThe archetype of power hitters feasting on fastballs and whiffing on offspeed pitches has long floated within baseball circles. The quotation featured above from the movie Major...

Yoenis Cespedes Playing Hurt for the A's

Yoenis Cespedes has been every bit as good as the Oakland Athletics could have hoped.  They surprised the baseball world this offseason when they won out and signed Cespedes out of Cuba.  The A's gave the 26-year old rookie, who would be playing American baseball for the first time, a 4-year, $36 million contract.  That deal is looking like a bargain after the performance...

Athletics 9, Rangers 3

Yoenis Cespedes had one of Oakland's two triples in the first inning and the Athletics jumped out to a quick lead in a 9-3 victory at Texas on Wednesday night to pull within three games of the AL West-leading Rangers. The Athletics, who had played five consecutive one-run games, led 5-0 only eight batters into the game. They chased Martin Perez (1-3) before the rookie left-hander...

A's hope to make final series with Rangers relevant

Oakland split its key four-game series at Texas, usually a good result at Rangers Ballpark, but for the A's, not a perfect scenario. Oakland had hoped to keep within striking distance of the Rangers in the AL West, but the A's are back to four games behind Texas with six games to play. The final three are against the Rangers. So the A's must hope that the Los Angeles...

A's set AL season strikeout record but earn key win

The Oakland A's established an all-time American League record for strikeouts by batters in a season Wednesday, but no one on the team was a bit unhappy with the mark. For all their K's, the A's are flying high, in a playoff spot and, after a 9-3 victory at Texas, just three games behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West. Oakland tied the Tampa Bay Devil Rays'...

Win over Texas has A's thinking division

The Oakland Athletics may be able to do better than just get into the playoffs as a wild card. They might sneak away with a division title if they keep playing like this against the AL West-leading Texas Rangers. Oakland led for good only three batters into the game and chased Texas starter Martin Perez before the end of the first inning in a 9-3 victory Wednesday night to pull...

One HR, Two HR, Reddick, Bluedick

The .245 AVG is going to look ugly next March but 31 HRs and 80+ R/RBI has been nirvana for anyone (like Rudy) who plucked Josh Reddick off free agency in shallow leagues this year.  The power is real and, unlike the last A’s power hitter (Jack Cust), he is an above average fielder.   So the A’s now have 2/3 of a phallic OF foundation with Reddick and Yoenis.  Where is...

Mariners-Athletics Preview

The Oakland Athletics are running out of time to catch the AL West leaders. Still, a series against the division-worst Seattle Mariners could help the A's move closer to their first playoff berth in six seasons. Oakland goes for a fifth straight victory over Seattle on Friday night when it begins a season-ending six-game homestand. After splitting a four-game set with West...
