Lost in the euphoria of Matt Kemp's walk-off home run on Wednesday was that Clayton Kershaw pitched another excellent game for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kershaw allowed one run in eight innings, throwing a career-high 120 pitches. He struck out seven and walked none, his fourth start without a walk this year and his eighth with one or fewer free passes.

"I felt good today. I was mixing all my pitches in there," Kershaw said.

If there was one thing to nitpick about Kershaw earlier in the season, it was his relative lack of strikeouts. He had 69 strikeouts in his first 12 starts, an average of 7.63 per nine innings. But in his last eight starts he has 63 strikeouts, an average of 10.63 per nine innings.

On Wednesday Kershaw had to pitch well as he was matched up against Cliff Lee of the Phillies, who also allowed one run in eight innings.

"Kershaw was good today. He's had a couple games like this, but he was really good today," said manager Don Mattingly. "You get him and Cliff going, and Cliff works so fast and uses so few pitches that it's almost contagious."

Kershaw is 7-5 with a 2.74 ERA through 20 starts this season, gunning for his fourth consecutive season with a sub-3.00 ERA, and looking every bit the part as an ace.
