Larry Bowa re-re-joined the Phillies this offseason, signing on as Ryne Sandberg’s bench coach. Today Bowa was on 94.1 WIP, and expressed that he believes Ruben Amaro Jr. will make a big trade before spring training. As to what that trade involves, there’s no way to know. As far as we can tell, this is just speculation by Bowa. Bowa is heralded as one of the better baseball minds in the sport, but it doesn’t take a baseball genius to analyze Amaro’s history and realize he’s not done. The most Philadelphia-friendly trade scenario would involve dealing Ryan Howard. While the Phillies would undoubtedly have to eat a large chunk of the Big Piece’s salary, to get him out of Philadelphia is one of the main goals of the Phillies this offseason. Amaro said yesterday that Chase Utley could move to first base should Ryan Howard be injured. So if Howard is dealt before Spring Training, the Phillies could be looking at a starting infield of 1B: Chase Utley 2B: Cesar Hernandez SS: Jimmy Rollins 3B: Cody Asche / Mikael Franco (Amaro said Franco will have a  chance to show he can compete at the MLB level and potentially earn the starting job in Spring Training)

The Latest on the Phillies and Roy Halladay

From 2010-11  with the Phillies, Roy Halladay was the best pitcher in the MLB. From 2012-13, Doc was a shell of that former star. Now that Halladay is a free agent, do the Phillies plan to bring him back? Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. was on 94,1 WIP today, and had this after being asked if the team would bring Halladay back: I absolutely cannot answer that because I do not know....

In the third installment of the newest regular feature on Phils Baseball, we run through the rumors from the past week from the guys at MLB Trade Rumors. Here are the latest Phillies rumors from the week of November 17-23...

Revisited Storyline: Plan B for the Philadelphia Phillies

In the shadow between a starter’s gig and a bench role, the front office of the Philadelphia Phillies will determine Darin Ruf’s 2014. Could he be part of a trade package to improve another deficiency? TAL’S HANDY CAPS Welcome, Newcomers: This article represents the thinking of a baseball man in my opinion. Most fans do not consider the budget, prospects on the radar, the...

Crazy Prediction: Phillies Sign Robinson Cano

Photo: USATSI I’d first like to point out that this entire article will be speculation. I have no sources telling me any of this is likely to happen. But hey, speculating can still be fun! Let’s get into it. What do the Phillies want to do this offseason? Make themselves a winner, duh. How? The only way Ruben Amaro Jr. knows how — by jumping off the high dive and doing a...

Amaro Says Utley Could Play First Base

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. made his rounds on Philadelphia sports radio today, appearing on both 94.1 WIP and 97.5 The Fanatic. In an interview with The Fanatic’s Mike Missanelli, Amaro said that Chase Utley is “the backbone of our club.” Amaro then proposed a situation — Ryan Howard goes down (which is pretty likely), and Chase Utley moves to first base with Cesar Hernandez...

Phillies Nation Player Review: Kevin Frandsen

(mlb.com) If you had to guess who had the best batting average for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2012, who would it be? Chase Ultey? Carlos Ruiz? Placido Polanco? Maybe even Shane Victorino? All of those would be wrong. The correct answer would be journeyman infielder Kevin Frandsen. Okay, so technically this isn’t true, as Frandsen did not qualify to have the highest batting average...

Phillies Nation Player Review: Ben Revere

(AP) No matter what Charlie Manuel tried having you believe at the end of the 2012 season, it was clear to Phillies analysts and fans alike that the team needed a new leadoff hitter. Jimmy Rollins was coming off one of the worst seasons of his career hitting .250 with an OBP of .316, his lowest OBP since 2009. Enter Ben Revere. On December 6, 2012, Revere was traded to the Phillies...

Carlos Ruiz Deal Is Not As Bad As You Think

If you thought the Phillies were nuts for re-signing catcher Carlos Ruiz for three years and $26 million, I would disagree. At first I thought it was a bad deal too, but the more I thought about it, the more I warmed up to it. Ruiz, who turns 35 in January, has spent his entire career with the Phillies. He played a key role in helping them win five straight NL East titles from 2007...

Chris Young Or Marlon Byrd? Wrong Comparison. Still, Phillies Fans Do Not Like Mets Signing

The Phillies signed outfielder Marlon Byrd to a two-year, $16 million contract. The Mets today signed outfielder Chris Young to a one-year, $7.25 million contract. Many fans took to Twitter today to express their anger that the Phillies could have had Young instead. I may be in the minority, but...

Cubs sign outfielder Casper Wells to minor league contract

Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports that the Cubs have signed outfielder Casper Wells to a minor league contract. He’ll presumably receive an invite to spring training. Wells made more news this year for bouncing around from team-to-team and making relief appearances in blowout games than anything else. The 29-year-old batted .155/.211/.169 with one double and one RBI over 76...

Phillies Nation Player Review: Michael Young

AP photo. When the Phillies signed Michael Young in December of 2012, they were not sure what they were going to get production-wise. What they did know was that they were getting a veteran, a professional, and somebody who would be a positive influence on and off the field. The Phillies were hoping to catch lightning in a bottle when they brought in Young after a 2012 season in...

Watch as Chooch Helps Celebrate a Child's Induction as a Volunteer Firefighter

Mere moments after he took the stage to answer questions on his new 3-year, $26 million deal with the Phillies, Carlos Ruiz made a surprise appearance at an induction ceremony for 6-year-old Aiden Riebel. The ceremony, dedicated to Aiden becoming an honorary volunteer fireman at the Washington Township fire Department,...

The Phillies answer to their pitching woes, enter Bob McClure. He pitched for 19 seasons in the Majors (1975-1993) with the Royals, Angels, Brewers, Expos, Cardinals, Mets, and Marlins. Primarily a reliever through his career, making 698 appearances to the tune of a 3.81 ERA/1.40 WHIP, McClure has also been the pitching coach for the Red Sox and Royals, with poor results. Pitching...
