The Yankees took down the Red Sox 6-4 tonight.  However, the real story is about the fireworks Yankee hitters provided.

Derek Jeter, the first-ballot hall of famer, just added to his legend by hitting career homerun number 250. That homerun put him in a very, very limited group.  The only other player to ever have 3,000 hits, 250 homeruns, 300 steals and 1,200 RBIs is The Say Hey Kid, Willie Mays.  Jeter’s homer tonight gives him 10 on the year as well as the Yanks 10 players with 10 or more homeruns this season, tying the club record set back in 1998.

Curtis Granderson, Russell Martin and Nick Swisher also went deep tonight, Swisher doing so twice.  The Yankees now have 181 homeruns this season.   That total is good for most by any team in the majors, 22 homers ahead of the second place Blue Jays, who have 159.

This was Swisher’s 19th multi-homer game in his career and the 12th time he’s homered from both sides of the plate.

The power display came in a game in which two of the Yankees’ best sluggers were out of the lineup. Mark Teixeria sat out with a sore left wrist and Alex Rodriguez is going to have his broken hand X-Rayed again Sunday.
