Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. will head to MLB’s GM meetings with a lot of work to do. The holes on his team have been well chronicled and after a very disappointing 81-81 season to forget, it is RAJ’s job to try to fill those holes and get the Phillies back on the winning side of the ledger. Amaro told CSN Philly’s Jim Salisbury that the Phillies have engaged in a significant amount of trade talks so far this offseason, especially for how early on it is in the offseason. While Amaro admitted he was intrigued, he said nothing was imminent. The question for the Phillies will be HOW to most prudently fill the holes on the team. Do you do it via free agency? Do you try to work out trades to acquire the help you need? Or is it some combination of the two? The truth is it will probably have to be a combination. While the Phillies do have money to spend on the free agent market, they do not have an unlimited amount of money, and they have a lot of holes to fill. It is unlikely the Phillies will be able to spend their way back into contention. Given the fact that the Phillies, during this run, have given up a significant, if not crippling amount of prospects, trading younger prospects may not be all that wise either. Amaro will have to find the correct combination. While the Phillies could be a couple of solid moves away from being relevant again, they also can’t continue to mortgage the future. This team isn’t really getting younger, unless Domonic Brown and Darin Ruff and Freddy Galvis wind up making significant contributions to this team. That remains to be seen. The Phillies WILL need to address their outfield, whether they add one or two to the mix. They’ll also likely need to add two veteran arms for the bullpen. And they’ll need a third baseman, though using Galvis there seems to be the likely course at this point. On top of it all, Amaro will have to balance the present with the future while putting a product on the field that fans can once again get excited about. No big deal, right?
