Well that didn’t take very long. To Mets fans’ delight, the Mets finally cut ties with their limping, slap hitting second baseman on Friday. Luis Castillo was set free to sign with any team that he wanted, leaving the Mets to eat his $6 mil contract. As it turns out, the Mets won’t have to eat the entire contract, as the Phillies have reportedly signed Castillo to a minor league contract worth $414,000. The Phillies have expressed interest in Castillo, who could provide some roster depth if Chase Utley is for any extended period of time. For Mets fans that are worried about Castillo finding his old self, you shouldn’t be. Castillo hasn’t been fully healthy in years, his defense is deteriorating, and he is no more than a slap hitter anymore.
