The Dodgers hoped they could get an All Star at a discount price in Dioner Navarro. The catcher, who once played for Los Angeles, recently came off the disabled list and entered the game in the eighth inning to replace Rod Barajas. Matt Guerrier promptly surrendered two singles to start the frame, and with one out and the bases loaded, threw a breaking ball in the dirt to Orlando Hudson. Rather than block the pitch with his body, Navarro attempted to back-hand the ball. He missed it though, allowing the runner at third to score on what was ruled a wild pitch.

Guerrier had no choice but to intentionally walk Hudson to get to Cameron Maybin. Maybin singled to score two runs, one of which crossing home on a missed catch error by Navarro. Just like that, a two-run, seven inning performance from Hiroki Kuroda went for naught.

The offense had another tough game. Andre Ethier ratcheted two hits, extending his streak to 26 games, second-longest in franchise history. James Loney had a sacrifice fly for an RBI, and Tony Gwynn, who seems to thrive off tormenting his former club, had a pinch-hit single that drove in the then-tying run in the seventh.

Jon Garland will start the rubber match for the Dodgers in Sunday’s matinee; he will share the rubber with Dustin Moseley.
