Like all concussions, it could turn out to be nothing or it could be very serious: Chase Utley was removed from Wednesday night's game against the Braves after getting hit in the head by a pitch.  The early word is that Utley suffered a "mild" concussion (as if there really are mild concussions), and will miss the next few games.  He will not travel to Milwaukee with the rest of the team. When you are coasting to the best record in baseball, minor injuries in the beginning of September aren't a big deal.  When the injury is a concussion, though, it's always a concern.  Given the streaky nature of the Phillies offense, they need to have all bats on hand come October.  Let's hope Utley sits out for a few days, clears the cobwebs and comes back rested and ready for another deep playoff run.

Utley may sit out two series

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley probably will sit out the rest of the team's road trip to recover from a concussion. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro told said he doesn't expect Utley to return until after the road trip ends Wednesday. "He’s going to be re-examined on Saturday," Amaro said. "If the test goes well, he...

No Utley, No Howard, No Rollins...No Problem

In their first of four games against the Brewers on Thursday night, the Phillies were without three of their star players, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley.  Howard got the night off, which is rare for him.  Rollins just came off the DL and the Phils will be working him back in slowly.  And Utley is back in Philly being examined after getting hit in the head with a fastball...

Risking Chase Utley Not Worth the Reward

We've learned a lot about concussions and head injuries in sports over the last few years. Flyers fans surely remember Eric Lindros' issues in that regard, football has changed rules to protect players from serious injury and Justin Morneau's promising career has come to a screeching halt thanks to a concussion he suffered last season. Phillies Sweep Braves With a Walk-Off Win

Phillies Brandon Beachy also pitched very well for the Braves; only Raul Ibanez touched him through five innings with a solo homer. That home run was #250 for Ibanez in his career.   The 1-1 tie held until a ball took a bad hop on Chase Utley in the seventh to score a run for the Braves. Utley had an interesting night. The inning before that hop, he was hit square in the...
