Earlier this week, we learned that the Phillies were preparing a $120 million offer to left hander Cole Hamels, but apparently he wanted more money. Today, sources close to Jon Heyman of CBSSports said that the Phillies and Hamels are “moving in the right direction” regarding the contract talks. Heyman says that the Phillies' willingness to offer Hamels six years “is a key development, giving them a strong chance.” Although there's still no word whether he'll accept that or not. Hamel's offer could be closer to the deal signed by Johan Santana with the Mets (six-years, $137.5 million) that the one signed by Matt Cain this season ($127.5 million for six years). The 28-year old Hamels is 11-4 with a 3.07 ERA, 1.0 HR/9, 2.1 BB/9 and 8.9 SO/9 in 126.0 innings with the Phillies in 2012. Image by furnstein under the Creative Commons License Agreement.

Cole Hamels Deserves Big Payday, and Phillies Should Be Team to Give It to Him

Phillies fans know what they're getting from Cole Hamels. Usually, it's an ERA around 3.00 and a couple of strong outings in the postseason. But the Phillies aren't thinking trade right...

Hamels Goes Yard, Awaits Payday

With 10 days left until the trade deadline, Cole Hamels is still proving he wants to stay in Philadelphia. Cole Hamels' Deal With the Phillies Could Be $142-144 Million

The numbers keep escalating but that the Phillies are still talking to Cole Hamels is a great sign. Former Reds and Nationals GM Jim Bowden is reporting that a deal could end up at $142 to $144 million. $144 million over six years would represent a $24 million annual average value. That number would equal Cliff Lee's average salary in his five year, $120 million deal. Hamels...

Pitchers homer off each other in same inning

Your browser does not support iframes. Any home run hit by a pitcher is a rare accomplishment. We see maybe a handful or so each season, and oftentimes it looks like complete luck. What happened on Saturday with Cole Hamels and Matt Cain was rarer than rare. Both the Giants and Phillies starting pitchers hit home runs — in the same inning. The last time two pitchers hit homers...

Cole Hamels, Phillies, Take on Matt Cain, Giants, In Possibly Hamels' Last Home Start as Phillie

In what could be Cole Hamels' last start in a Phillies uniform, it's set to be a great pitching matchup. Hamels (11-4, 3.07 ERA) will go toe-to-toe with Giants ace Matt Cain (10-3, 2.56 ERA) in game two of this three-game series. After dropping the opener last night, 7-2, the Phils will look to even out the series behind the arm of Hamels. In Hamels' last start, against...

Giants 6, Phillies 5(10)

Cole Hamels waved to an appreciative crowd that gave him a standing ovation after a mediocre outing. Was it his last time wearing a Philadelphia Phillies uniform? ''I can't control it,'' Hamels said after a 6-5 loss to the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings Saturday. Hamels and fellow All-Star pitcher Matt Cain hit homers in the same inning, but Gregor Blanco...

Pen Blows It Again as Phillies Lose in 10

In what could have been Cole Hamels’ final start in front of the home crowd, he waged a war with one of the best pitchers in the NL, Matt Cain. The two pitched, and hit, their way to a draw. However, Jonathan Papelbon again failed in a non-save situation, allowing the Giants to prevail 6-5 in 10 innings. OH, BULLPEN -Jonathan Papelbon is really, really good at times. And then it’s...

Papelbon, Phillies Fall To Giants 6-5 In Ten Innings

Ugh. Well they're back to the losing spirit in Philly. The Phillies dropped game two of three against the Giants this afternoon's slugfest in what was set to be a pitcher's duel. Cole Hamels entered this game with an 11-4 record and a 3.07 ERA and left with the same record but a much higher 3.23 ERA.
