The Philadelphia Phillies have avoided a series sweep against the Washington Nationals.  Starter Cole Hamels went eight strong innings, allowing zero runs and four hits while striking out eight.

For the first time in his career, catcher Carlos Ruiz batted cleanup in the lineup.  He successfully continued his campaign for earning an All-Star roster spot by going 3-4 tonight with 1 run scored. In the process, Ruiz raised his batting average to (.357).

Cole Hamels had a no-hitter going in the 6th inning until a one-out double by second-baseman Danny Espinosa to left field.  He only allowed three additional hits after that at-bat until being replaced in the 9th by closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Attendance: 43,926 (228th consecutive regular-season sellout).
