Recently, I unveiled the 2012 RAW Pitcher Ratings, preseason edition. The goal of these ratings is to strip away stats like ERA, WHIP and wins and focus on the raw skills evident in the numbers (strikeout rate, whiff rate, groundball rate, etc…). Some players, however, are destined to outperform or under perform their RAW Pitcher Ratings. Cory Luebke, 93.5 RAW, which puts him in front of CC Sabathia, Cole Hamels and Justin Verlander. That seems crazy, right? On the surface, it sounds absolutely insane to suggest that Luebke is a better pitcher than the proven ace arms of Sabathia, Hamels and Verlander. However, his peripheral numbers from last season make for one compelling argument. Matthew McMillen took a look at some of those impressive numbers in this article, but let’s compare some of those peripherals to the pitchers listed above… The one thing you can see from the chart – and what gives him the edge in terms of his 2011 RAW, was that he held the highest strikeout rate...

MLB Preview 2012: San Diego Padres

After somehow hanging around until the final weekend in 2010, the Padres fell back to reality in 2011. Then GM Jed Hoyer knew 2010 was an aberration, so he sent his best player, Adrian Gonzalez, to Boston last winter kicking off the rebuilding process (yet again). No one, outside of a few crazed Padres fans, expected much from the friars last year. And to some degree, those expectations...

Padres, Dead Kennedys, and A Holiday In Peoria

After a short drive I tried to piece together my upcoming trip to Peoria. As the legs of the event began to fall into place in my mind the Dead Kennedys' Holiday in Cambodia began to play on the radio. And as any fool will tell you, Cambodia and Peoria rhyme perfectly, so I began to pen a song. This song is based on my one experience in Peoria last season, which inexplicably found...

African Proverbs: Padres Players Edition

Earlier in the month we attempted to show how Orlando Hudson would have benefited from exposure to proverbs at some point in his life. Then we sought to explain the actions of the Padres Front Office through small pieces of African wisdom. This is the third installment of the African Proverb series -- the Padres Players Edition. When he was a young boy Mark Kotsay would sit with...

Decision 2012: The Greatest Promotion Ever

The Padres marketing department announced that they will have three separate retro nights for the 2012 season, honoring the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s, respectively. But the genius of it is that the uniforms they will wear on each of these nights will be decided interactively with a vote by us, the fans. We will get to choose one uniform from three selections in each decade...

Fantasy Baseball Dos and Don’ts: San Diego Padres Edition

When fantasy leaguers generally think of the San Diego Padres, they think “avoid the hitters and draft the pitchers”, mainly due to the ballpark affect. However, as with every rule, there are exceptions.

I hope that you are all enjoying it from day to day, and keep coming back to see what is going on at other people's blogs. Street joins tradition of greatness in Padres 'pen

The San Diego Padres may have never won a World Series, had a pitcher toss a no-hitter or had a position player hit for the cycle. But the one thing they've always done well is provide a stellar bullpen.

Richard pleased to resume facing hitters

For the first time since July 4, Padres pitcher Clayton Richard faced hitters Tuesday -- and though it was only an eight-minute session, it marked another milestone in his recovery from shoulder surgery last season.

Cashner dials it up in live BP session

Andrew Cashner sounded a little empathetic on Monday afternoon when he was asked about facing actual hitters for the first time in camp.

Croatia 1-3 Sweden: Larsson double and Ibrahimovic penalty ensures convincing win for Erik Hamren's side (Goal.com)

An astute display of attacking football by Erik Hamren's men in Zagreb saw the Blue-Yellow pick up a deserved victory over their fellow Euro 2012 finalists.

Daily Friar 2.28.12

I have been looking forward to March for a while now. There is a lot going on that get's me excited to turn the page on my calendar. However, this year we are granted one more day of February. Today was supposed to be the last day of the month. Oh well. What does have me a little worried for March though is that Fox Sports San Diego is supposed to launch next Monday and we still...
