I'd give the stars of the night to two Peoria Chiefs, Ryan Cuneo and Michael Jensen. Iowa 3 - @Round Rock 2; No multi-hit games for Iowa, but Campana, Jackson, Castillo  and Cardenas reach base multiple times. Campana and Jackson's speed and the defensive miscues of Tommy Mendonca (3B) and Dusty Brown (C) lead to two runs without a hit for Iowa in the third. Sappelt added the go-ahead run with a triple in the 6th to score Castillo. Coleman got the start and went 5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K. B. Parker gets his second save of the season. @Huntsville 5 - Tennessee 2; McNutt gives up his first run of the season but just the one in 4 innings of work including 3 K's and 1 BB. He gets saddled with the loss but it was J. Antigua with the bad night, giving up 4 ER in 2.1 innings of work. No walks for the Smokies and just 2 extra-base hits by Apodaca and Mota. @Dunedin 6 - Daytona 3; Szczur with a 4/5 night, but Rohan is the offensive star with a 3/5 night including a double an...

Baez Hits for the Cycle at Diablo

Javier Baez hit for the cycle and drove-in all five Cub runs with a two-run triple and a three-run home run, but the Angels rallied for five runs in the middle-three innings to edge the Cubs 6-5, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Diablo Park Field #3 in Tempe, AZ. In addition to his big day at the plate, Baez also stole a base (3rd base following his...

The Children Are the Future- Cubs Minor League Update Sponsored by Phillip Morris

Iowa It was a sloppy game for the Iowa Cubs as Vitters, Rizzo and Cardenas each committed an error. Brett Jackson went 1-5 with a triple and Nate Robertson continued his inspired campaign to be released within the first month. Smokies Rain Out Daytona There's just no way to sugarcoat it- Hayden Simpson was awful [...]

Cubs Recap for April 17, 2012

The Cubs fall to 3-8 and only Peoria manages a win in the organization. @Marlins 5 - Cubs 2; It appears the Cubs have a script they can follow for the rest of the season, solid starting pitching effort, a pathetic offense, give up some outs on defense and the basepaths, and then watch the bullpen implode and lose the game. Dempster goes 6 innings with 8 K's against just 2 BB...

Cubs Recap for April 15, 2012

And I'm back from the high seas... @Cardinals 10 - Cubs 3; Maholm is gonna look like the goat in this game and he certainly didn't pitch particularly well, but he also wasn't helped out one tad bit by his manager or his defense. Sveum puts out the B-squad against the right-hander Jake Westbrook including Jeff Baker, Joe Mather, Reed Johnson and Blake DeWitt with the...

The Children Are The Future- Cubs Minor League Update Sponsored by RedLobster

Iowa Brett Jackson drew a pair of walks got a double and stole a base as he continues his impressive minor league career. Right now Jackson is sporting the kind of line that you would expect-mid range batting average, some power, some walks, lots of k's and some stolen bases. Despite all the experts saying [...]

Fun With Small Sample Sizes

After 10 games, the 2012 Cubs are what we thought they were, a poor offensive team with moments of intriguing starting pitching. Here are some rather meaningless numbers I stumbled across... Cubs 2012 P/PA - 3.71 (Team Leader: I Stewart 4.19) Cubs 2011 P/PA - 3.74 (C. Pena 4.13) Cubs 2012 BB/PA - 0.79 (J. Baker 1.76) Cubs 2011 BB/PA - 0.71 (C. Pena 1.67) Cubs 2012 SB/CS - 8/11 for...

Dong Dinger Slams Door on Angel Comeback Bid

Dong-Yub Kim blasted a grand slam to cap at five-run 8th, as the Cubs outlasted the Angels 11-8 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa, AZ   DY Kim was one of a half-dozen players signed by the Cubs out of South Korea during the years 2006-10, receiving a $550K bonus as an 18-year old in February 2009. Kim made his U. S. debut...

Marlon Byrd: Focus of Jackie Robinson Day shouldn’t be on lack of black players

Jackie Robinson Day in Major League Baseball is mostly a day of celebration. All players wear jersey No. 42 in honor of the first player to break MLB’s color barrier. Some guys do even more as a tribute. But inevitably, one issue that comes up each year is the declining number of African-American players in the game. Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd, who comprises part of the 8% of...

What can we expect from Starlin Castro on defense?

Starlin Castro has not been a good defensive shortstop to this point in this career. His career UZR is -11, his DRS is -15 and his Total Zone (TZ) is -27. His 60 errors since 2010 leads all MLB players. Ian Desmond is close at 58, but has played a little more than Castro. Those [...]

Are Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam The Real Reason Theo Epstein Went To The Cubs?

As you may have known, the Chicago Cubs hired Theo Epstein as their President of Baseball Operations, or Savior for short. Many have lauded the move by Cubs owner Tom Ricketts and president Crane Kenney to bring Theo to Chicago to rebuild the Cubs. However, I recently came across some shocking evidence that shatters the generally accepted “fact” that Rickets and Kenney were...

Series Preview: Chicago Cubs (3-7) at Miami Marlins (4-6)

The Cubs stumble into their next opponent having lost all three series so far this year. They'll face the Marlins and their hideous HR structure. Thank DeRosa that this series is being played in Miami and not Chicago – the media firestorm with Ozzie's return after suspension from his recent comments and the mere existence [...]

The Children Of Forest-First Men Update Sponsored by Mish

Iowa Iowa cranked out 22 hits and still managed to lose yesterday in a 10-11 slugfest. In a sure sign that he has given up his soul to the lord of the light Tony Campana hit a big boy HR. Rizzo was 3-7 and Adrian Cardenas had 4 hits. Honestly at this point I would [...]

Cubs and Marlins already in progress

Sorry for the outage yet again. Here's Gameday.

Getaway Day Lineups for Dummies

You can't stop Joey Bombs; you can only hope to contain him. Consider this line that I tweeted earlier today from Busch Stadium where the Cardinals hosted the Cubs. “#Cubs lineup avg by batter: .182, .000, .371, .111, .267, .167, .120, .071, .000. #GetawayDay” The last game in a series is often considered a “Getaway Day” for the visiting team, and there are times when...
