Cubs rookie centerfielder Brett Jackson is trying his best to impress the big club, and while his batting average is an anemic .191 in 31 games with Chicago, he showed Friday night against the Pirates that his defense—and dedication—is nothing short of superb.

With his team up 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Jackson chased down a ball off the bat of Pittsburgh superstar Andrew McCutchen that surely would have been extra bases had the rookie outfielder not ran full tilt into the unpadded portion of PNC Park’s outfield fence to make the amazing, and somewhat painful, catch. Following his stellar grab Jackson lay on the ground for a few minutes before getting up and leaving the field under his own power.

For his valiant effort Jackson ended up with nothing more than a bruised knee, while his Cubs walked away with a surprising 12-2 thumping of the Pirates.
