Padres are proof that hitting is contagious

The San Diego Padres have three of the hottest hitters in the major leagues -- third baseman Chase Headley and outfielders Will Venable and Cameron Maybin. Headley was 4-for-5 Sunday at Colorado with his 23rd homer and a career-high six RBI in the Padres' 11-10 loss. The six RBI were two shy of the Padres' single-game record and the most by a Padre since Adrian Gonzalez...

Andrew Werner was Pulling the String Last Night

As I was flipping channels last night I managed to stumble on the Padres – Dodgers game. Andrew Werner, a 25 year-old rookie making only his third career start, was on the hill for the Padres. It only took me a few pitches to determine I should stick with the game for a little while. Although the Dodgers would eventually win the game in extra-innings, Werner pitched a great game...

All good things must come to end, and the Padres streak of consecutive series won did at three when they dropped the last two games against the Rockies after winning the first. The Padres won a close on Friday, 5-4 before getting blown out 9-1 on Saturday. The Padres retook the lead on Sunday after allowing a seven-run fourth before giving the lead back in the seventh, ultimately...

Fort Wayne Player and Pitcher of the Month: August 2012

With just a few games left to play, Fort Wayne is the only franchise in the Padres minor league system confirmed to be in this years playoffs. With several highly touted prospects within their ranks, the Tin caps can boast several standout performances for the month of August but Catcher Austin Hedges gets the nod. Taken in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft, Hedges had a commitment...

Daily Friar 9.3.12

The unpredictability of Coors Field continued yesterday. You never know who is going to win a game in that place. A deep fly ball that would be a routine out in Petco just keeps on going in Denver. That was the case last night when Casey Kelly gave up the 7 runs in the third, and Brad Brach gave up the 3 runs in the 7th. Ultimately though the Padres were done in by lack of defense...

Padres 6, Dodgers 3(11)

Logan Forsythe hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the 11th inning after Yasmani Grandal tied the score with a two-run homer in the eighth, and the San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-3 Tuesday night. The Dodgers wasted an excellent outing from ace Clayton Kershaw and dropped 1 1/2 games behind St. Louis in the race for the second NL wild card. John Ely (0...

Nelson lifts Rockies past Padres

Chris Nelson wasn't sure he had hit the ball hard enough for a homer. When he saw the saw ball disappear over the fence as he rounded first base, out came a celebratory fist pump, and a day marked by frustration at the plate and in the field turned noticeably bright. Nelson had his go-ahead, three-run home run in the seventh inning, and the Colorado Rockies overcame a career...

Daily Friar 9.4.12

I thought the loss against the Rockies was the end of heartbreaks for this Padres team. I was proven wrong last night against the Dodgers. What started out so promising with Chase Headley’s 24th homerun, ended in utter defeat in extra innings. Any time the game goes into extra innings while the Padres are on the road I just know something bad is going to happen. It never bodes...

Rockies 11, Padres 10

Chris Nelson had a go-ahead, three-run home run in the seventh inning and the Colorado Rockies overcame a career-best six RBIs by Chase Headley to beat the San Diego Padres 11-10 on Sunday. Tyler Colvin and Ramon Hernandez also homered and Dexter Fowler had three hits and two RBIs to help the Rockies win two of three to snap the Padres' string of three consecutive series victories...

Lake Elsinore Player and Pitcher of the Month: August 2012

It was noted in last month’s player feature that Catcher and DH Tommy Medica has had a breakout season.                               This month we want to highlight the return to prominence of infielder Chris Bisson. Drafted as a 2B, Bisson has played SS for the most part this season. Over the past three professional years            he has been deployed at...

Daily Friar 9.5.12

The last thing you want to do after going into extra innings one night is to do it all over again the next. However, if that were to happen again then the very last thing you would want to do is lose again after playing that long. It’s no secret that losing in extra innings is demoralizing to a team, but to have that happen again just a day later could be even more devastating...
