I won't take up too much space up here today as there are a ton of links to get to. I was actually surprised to see so many today since we are so close to spring training with not a whole lot left for the Padres to do to the team. Rumors have us possibly picking up another reliever, but that remains to be seen. What I'm excited for is to see what the prospects will do for us this season when it comes. Should be fun to watch. Here are your links for today: Submit articles and follow me on twitterFollow @M_Rennick   MLB.com has their top 10 catching prospects; #6 is Yasmani Grandal "Grandal showed an ability to hit from both sides of the plate, with some power and an advanced approach at the plate. He should be a capable catcher defensively, though he could use some move development time, and his strong arm enabled him to throw out basestealers during his climb."   Bill Center at the UT has a nice article on Tim Stauffer"And with Mat Latos and Aaron ...

Top 15 Prospects: San Diego Padres

The San Diego system is deep. What’s most impressive is that the organization has been able to bulk up its minor league depth through a variety of methods: drafting, international free agency and trades. In particular, scouting director Jaron Madison had an outstanding draft in 2011. Even with the loss of some of its front office talent much more remains. The loss of young hurler...

Free Kyle Blanks?

In 2009, at the precocious age of 22, Kyle Blanks stormed into the Show and promptly swatted 10 big flies, and his .372 wOBA — in a limited sample — was third-best on the Padres. In other words, he had arrived, and the Friars happily installed him as their cleanup hitter for the 2010 campaign. But after a slow start, Blanks was felled by Tommy John surgery, and has seemingly...

The Padres and Cake (part 3): Indoctrination

In Wednesday's The Padres and Cake (part 2): A Commode Story, I told you that my reasons for deceiving you were pure . . .Our topic is indoctrination. Properly indoctrinating young children is no easy task. You might think it so but the process is painstaking and endless. Are my little ones Padres fans? Sure. But to what degree? They know the name of Gwynn and that the Dodgers...

Friday links

In new(ish) semi-weekly tradition, here are some links for your perusal: At Chicken Friars, Justin hopes that the Padres can extend Cameron Maybin this offseason. He’s not alone. Maybin recently switched agents, delaying any chance of ironing out an extension in the near future. Hopefully he’ll get locked up soon enough. Tom Krasovic and Friarhood held a chat. Tom answered...

Daily Friar 1.19.12

Woohoo!! We are exactly one month away from pitchers and catchers reporting to camp. Spring training is on the horizon and slowly but surely it is almost here. The Rangers will have one more arm in their rotation when they break camp in a month. Yesterday they signed the top foreign prize in Yu Darvish. 6 years, $60M on top of the $51.7M they had to pay to win rights to discuss...

Plantier already working hard to boost offense

The Padres are apparently extremely serious about improving their sickly offense from last season, so much so that new hitting coach Phil Plantier said recently he is willing to go to great lengths to ensure such gains.

19 Reasons: The Great Meme Contest of '11

The introduction to 19 Reasons can be read here. Here's reason One and reason Two. Three is (uh . . somewhere?). Officially, this is Reason Four. My dictionary doesn't have a proper definition for the word meme, at least in the context that we have come to know it during these days of the internet. As such I've decided to take a snippet from Wikepedia which is in fine...
