Due to family being in town recently, I haven't been able to watch many Padres games. Lately I've been able to sneak away for a few minutes and catch the tail end of games, but last night I was unable to watch any of it. However, after reading the recap it appears that I didn't miss out on too much. Going against Adam Wainright is no easy task to begin with, but to face him when he is feeling good is nearly impossible. Seems like the only thing the Padres could take from this game was Parrino's defensive plays and Volquez still pitching somewhat decently. Of course his control is still in need of work. Padres' middle infield still cause for concern

The Padres middle infield situation is getting murkier. It was just last Thursday that shortstop Jason Bartlett and second baseman Orlando Hudson were replaced by shortstop Everth Cabrera and second baseman Alexi Amarista. But things haven't improved appreciably since that move was made May 17 and it's worth keeping an eye on Class AAA Tucson where Logan Forsythe is leading...

Padres starter Stauffer gets second opinion

San Diego Padres starter Tim Stauffer has received a second opinion on his sprained right elbow from Dr. Lewis Yocum. Manager Bud Black did not have a report on Stauffer's exam Thursday before the Padres played the New York Mets. Yocum, the Los Angeles Angels' physician, performed reconstructive elbow surgery Wednesday on Stauffer's teammate, left-hander Cory Luebke...

Gwynn joining Tull group in pursuit of Padres

Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn Monday said he is aligning with one of the five groups reportedly interested in buying the San Diego Padres. Gwynn has accepted an invitation to join Thomas Tull's group in a to-be-determined capacity. "I'm going to help Tull any way I can," Gwynn said Monday. "He's the right guy to own the Padres. "He's bringing...

Padres' middle-infield questions still unanswered

Daily Friar 5.24.12

The problem with the Padres playing on the East Coast is the early start times. Usually I'm out doing something around 4 or even earlier, and I often miss most of the games. This last series with St. Louis was no exception. But after reading all the recaps for all the games I realized that I really didn't miss a whole lot. I did see most of the first game, which was the best...

Pitcher Profile: Kick His Bass, Sea Ass!

You spilled the salt! I feel like that’s what you should yell after your Hodgepadre gives up more than three earned runs at home.  Raise the fences PETCO!  When your Hodgepadre spills the salt, you have to throw the shaker over your shoulder. But what if your Hodgepadre is un-throwable?  Mat Latos sure toed the line last year, but ended strong.  Cory Luebke stayed on the table...

San Diego Swept Away In St. Louis.

The Padres began their marathon 10 game road trip in lousy fashion, losing three straight to the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. After beating the Angels in an extra-inning thriller, the Padres lost a heartbreaker to the Cardinals in their first game on Monday night. They then were shutout on Tuesday before giving up a three run lead before their second at-bats in the finale on Wednesday...

Padres 11, Mets 5

Will Venable hit a pair of RBI doubles and Cameron Maybin had two run-scoring singles as the San Diego Padres broke out the offense after a long rain delay and beat the New York Mets 11-5 Thursday night. Jesus Guzman hit a two-run double in a four-run third to help the Padres rebound from being swept in a three-game series in St. Louis. Everth Cabrera had a career-high four hits...

White Sox finalize contract with Hudson

The Chicago White Sox finalized the signing of infielder Orlando Hudson to a one-year contract on Tuesday after the parties had agreed to the deal on Sunday. Hudson, 34, started 33 games for the San Diego Padres this season, but was released on Thursday, as the Padres restructure their roster. White Sox manager Robin Ventura has said Hudson may play some third base for the White...

Mets rookie melts after rain delay as Padres roll to win

NEW YORK -- The San Diego Padres pounded away at a New York Mets rookie making his first major league start, welcoming him back from a lengthy rain delay with a big inning. Then the Padres went on to have their biggest offensive performance of the season. San Diego picked up an 11-5 win Thursday, knocking out 18 hits against rookie Jeremy Hefner and three Mets relievers. The...

Daily Friar 5.22.12

The Padres are playing good baseball right now. I say that over the course of the past 3 games. Ever since that blow out by the Angels and the Dodgers, the team has been playing smart (or smarter) ball. We won the last two at home agains the Angels. Last night in St. Louis we played an outstanding game in my opinion. Yes we lost, however, as far as losses go that was a well fought...

Not what you expect

Since you follow the St Louis Cardinals, you know they are hosting the San Diego Padres this week.  If you read this site with any regularity you know I blog about the San Diego Padres in my spare time.  So naturally this post will be about last night’s 4-3 win over those Padres, right? Nope.  Today’s post is about Albert Pujols.  Why?  Because I had the opportunity to watch...

View From My Window: Padres Here For 4.

Memorial Day weekend is a great time for baseball. Families around the northeast will have their first traditional BBQ of the year. I love Memorial Day because (with respect to Gary Keith and Ron), I enjoy sitting outside and listening to the WFAN broadcast while enjoying some delicious BBQ. This weekend, the San Diego Padres head east to join the Mets for the start of the longest...

Game Preview: Padres @ Mets

The Padres come to town tonight as the Mets try to make it three games in a row. Yesterday the Mets took the series against the Pirates as the pitching staff the Bucs. For the Mets tonight, the main story line is the new starter, Jeremey Hefner as he takes on Eric Stults of San Diego. As you all know, finding a consistent starter since Pelfrey went down has been difficult. Schwinden...

Pre-Game: San Diego Padres (16-29) @ New York Mets (24-20)

The Mets return home tonight against the Padres to open up an 11 game home stand.  The Padres come into Citi Field with the 2nd worst record in the NL.  Yesterday Jon Niese turned in his best start of the month with 7.2 innnigs of 1 run ball.  Bobby Parnell and Frank Francisco combined for the final 4 outs.  Cpt. Kirk, DW5 and The Dude all had RBI’s in the Mets 3-1 win over...
