Every time the Padres look to have a little fight in them, the Reds just knock them back down to size. There is good news though in all this. We are scoring runs, and we are losing by a very small margin. The only difference is there bullpen is phenomenal while ours is just good. There was a chance last night to get at the Reds bullpen, but it was quickly squandered. Carlos Quentin smacked a ball off Aroldis Chapman, but ultimately he shut the Padres down again. They are playing right now in the early game, but it's not looking so good at the moment. However, if there is something we can learn from this series it's that no lead is safe in The Great American Ballpark. Padres couldn't get what they wanted for Headley

The San Diego Padres didn't make any last-minute moves at the trade deadline, and team officials were comfortable with that. They already had signed two players being targeted by other teams -- left fielder Carlos Quentin and right-handed closer Huston Street -- to multi-year contract extensions, and they set the cost for third baseman Chase Headley so high that clubs stopped...

Erik Hamren struggles again as the Padres lose a close one to the Rainiers. Despite a great night from Tommy Medica, the Storm get blown out 12-3. Frank Garces and Justin Hancock continue to pitch well for the TinCaps and Emeralds, respectively, as both teams win close games. The Hubbub over Headley

It's been a while since I've seen Oriole fans clamoring for a player that is not an impending free agent and the player they are clamoring for is not exactly a household name. He is San Diego third baseman Chase Headley.Admittedly, I didn't know tons about the guy and while the Orioles need help at third base, didn't understand the hype. So with some assertions from...

Daily Friar 8.3.12

Remember how last month the Padres were giving teams one game out of the series, and then stomping on them for the rest of it? Well the Reds have given the Padres a taste of their own medicine. After winning the first game in dominant fashion, the Padres then dropped the next three to the Reds. But let's face it, the Reds are a damn good team. The Padres did give a fight though...

Padres catcher homers in first major league at-bat

A long journey climaxed in incredible fashion for 26-year-old career minor league catcher Eddy Rodriguez on Thursday when he homered in his first major league at-bat. As recently as Monday, Rodriguez, who came to this country from Cuba on a raft when he was 8 and spent six years in the minor leagues, was hitting .223 for Class A Lake Elsinore. Then Rodriguez got called up to...

Daily Friar 8.1.12

We have survived another trade deadline. Compared to last season this one was pretty tame. Not a huge amount of big names were traded, although the Phillies did send their outfield to the West Coast. The Padres were quiet all day not trading anyone for the first time since 2008. I like the fact that Byrnes didn't just make a trade to make a trade. This will just set things up...

Padres 3, Mets 1

Carlos Quentin scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning when he knocked the ball out of catcher Josh Thole's glove, and the San Diego Padres denied R.A. Dickey his 15th victory with a 3-1 win over the New York Mets on Friday night. Clayton Richard (8-11) limited New York to one run and eight hits in seven-plus innings. Dickey (14-3) held the Padres to one run and one hit...

Ludwick, Reds, Funkblast Friars at Great American Bandbox.

Just like the final series before the All-Star break, the Padres took game one from the Reds only to drop the final three in the long series. The series saw plenty of offense supplied by the Friars as they totaled 25 runs over the series, scoring at least four runs per game. Former Friar Ryan Ludwick shined against San Diego pitching, going 6-12 with two homer runs and 10 RBIs in...

Defensive troubles doom Mets to loss at San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- With their ace R.A. Dickey on the mound, the New York Mets, against a San Diego Padres team 19 games under .500, sought their fifth victory in six games on Friday. Dickey's knuckleball was "dancing, just dancing," said Padres No. 5 hitter Yonder Alonso. But the Mets failed Dickey, who couldn't overcome a sloppy defense that helped the Padres to...

Tater Trot Tracker: Trot Times for August 2 by Larry Granillo

Sixteen home runs on Thursday. That's a far cry from the 42 that were hit just the day before. My tater trot tracking hand thanks you, major league sluggers. Now how about some trots? Home Run of the Day: Eddy Rodriguez, San Diego Padres - 20.01 seconds [video] The downside of having so few home runs hit around the league is that there are fewer options for Home...

Mets vs. Padres Preview

By SBRForum.com  Tonight begins the start of a three-game road series for the Mets against the San Diego Padres. The MLB odds are in their favor for the opener, but what about for the remaining two games? Game one is a dandy, with R.A. Dickey on the mound for the Mets and Clayton Richard, one of San Diego’s most reliable starters, going opposite him. Photo by Michael G. Baron...
