The White Sox made a subtle, yet important roster move after last night’s game. The team optioned right-handed bullpen arm Deunte Heath back to AAA Charlotte and promoted lefty Donnie Veal to take his place. Heath really struggled in his four appearances out of the bullpen since being called up mid-April, giving up seven runs over 5.2 innings. If this is indeed the last time we see Deunte Heath this season, which is possible given he hasn’t really impressed in his couple of stints with the team, my lasting memory will be the mammoth home run Heath gave up to the first batter he saw this year: an absolute bomb to dead center by Yan Gomes in Cleveland last month. Needless to say, Heath is a guy who really didn’t show much while he was up here. Veal was a pretty key guy down the stretch last season for the Soutsiders, as the lefty specialist held left-handed hitters to just an .094 average in his 24 appearances last season. However, he struggled with his command to start the season, as lefties hit .455 against him while Veal six guys in 6.1 innings. Since being demoted to Charlotte on May 1 in favor of Brian Omogrosso, Veal appeared in four games and had much better control. While he scattered 10 hits over eight innings, he walked just two guys and did not allow a run. The promotion of Veal is a key one, as it gives the Sox a second left-hander in the bullpen. Matt Thornton has had a lot of pressure on him being the only lefty of the group the past couple of weeks, and if Veal can be anywhere close to the guy he was last September, it would take a ton of that pressure off Thornton and the rest of the bullpen.
