After allowing three earned runs through six innings of work tonight against the Miami Marlins, R.A. Dickey‘s 2012 season came to an end in atypical fashion, without a victory.  Let’s face it, as Mets fans we are no strangers to watching the team come up on the losing end of ballgames, but with Dickey on the mound, it has been different.  R.A. rounds out his 2012 campaign with 20 wins and just 6 losses, but beyond that, he continually gave fans a reason to believe that on any given night he took the mound the Mets were going to be the best team on the field.

The pride he takes in perfecting his craft has seemingly extended to his adoring fans who will simply not be satisfied with anything less than a Cy Young award for their 20-game winner.

Close the book on R.A. Dickey’s 2012 season: 2.73 ERA, 233.2 IP, 230 strikeouts. 4.26 strikeout-to-walk. The Cy Young favorite.

R.A. Dickey’s 2012 season is over. When that book came out, we had no idea how much more interesting story would get.

For the 37-year-old knuckleballer, such accolades may not carry as much weight as the journey itself.

While Dickey’s path through the majors is special for so many reasons, that’s not why he deserves the Cy Young award.  R.A. Dickey wasn’t just the best knuckleballer, he wasn’t just a ‘feel good story’, he was the best pitcher in the National League this season and for that reason, he should be recognized as such.  Earlier today, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York wrote that Dickey’s future with the team is ‘not entirely secure’:

R.A. Dickey’s future with the organization is not entirely secure, a team source acknowledged. The Mets have a $5 million option on the knuckleballer for 2013, but he will be seeking a big extension this winter.
Despite knuckleballers often successfully pitching into their 40s, Mets officials appear wary of making a sizable commitment. That could lead Dickey to being traded this offseason if the right deal presented itself, since the Mets would have some starting-pitching depth to absorb his departure.
Trading a 20-game winner (and perhaps the reigning Cy Young winner) would not be a popular move among the fan base and could further erode attendance in 2013.
But while the Mets do take those types of factors into account, a team official maintained baseball decisions will trump marketing concerns this offseason. The roster will turn over, team sources pledge.”

By all means, turn the roster over, but show veteran holdovers like David Wright (who Rubin mentions the team hopes to extend past next year) and other potential free agents that you’re trying to put together a team that can compete now as well as the future.  Dickey is a leader and while I can envision teams around the league drooling at the possibility of obtaining a pitcher of skill and character, as a Mets fan, I hope 2012 was just the beginning of his storied run with the team and not the grand finale.
