Jon Garland strained his oblique muscle Wednesday and the team hopes to have him back by April 12. This looks to give either young sensation John Ely or veteran Tim Redding a chance to make the team out of camp. Both haven’t given up a run this spring and Ely looks especially good, back to his old self from last year. I’d go with Ely, who showed early last year how could he can be and what a deal we got in sending Pierre to the White Sox. Redding looks good as well but you know the saying, “Old dogs don’t learn new tricks” and I just can’t see Redding continuing to be more effective than the 4.95 Career ERA that he has.
